19 Renault 19 e6J Head Gasket Replacement

Hi,
Need to take the head off the old 19 (1.4 E6J 1991) - 350k miles - its done fantastic on one head gasket but no 3 cylinder not firing at all and water in the rocker cover so its defo new gasket time, looks fairly straight forward but anything to look out for ?

Looks really good, you've obviously been looking after the coolant and have avoided corrosion.

Hard to tell from a photo but it looks like it only requires very minimal cleaning. If it hasn't overheated there's no reason for it not to be flat and OK to just have a clean up and go straight back on. But you can use a steel rule and a torch to make yourself happy if you want.

If it has no corrosion or pitting which it looks like it doesn't then just carefully scrape off any bits of old gasket etc with a stanley blade, clean the face up generally with some scotchbrite and put it back.
 
Thanks for looking, the gasket looked ok to be honest - couldn't see any obvious breaks but there must have been something around no 3, pic below - not the best. Think I'll track down a straight edge, saw a decent one for £20 - can't believe the price folks charge for these, £200 - £300...! Good tip on the torch...

YES, you must do the angle tightening. That's actually the most important part. The first torque tightening just sort of initially beds everything down so that you can start the proper bolt stretching (by angle tightening) for each bolt from the same starting point.

Looks like it's had a 'slight' oil weep for quite some time!

I didn't take enough pictures, can you tell me where the two pipes connect to from the fuel filter - one goes to the degassing unit, does the other feed direct into the carburettor..?
Then the fuel feed from the pump plugs into other side of degassing unit..?
 
Doh, that was the fuel pump, all sorted out now, everything is back together and the engine actually fired up! Still on stands as too much leak from front exhaust clamp (had to break the front pipe to get the manifold off - no way could I get those flange nuts off the manifold to exhaust union). So encouraging so far, back under it tomorrow (rain permitting) to sort the leak out, then a road-test, just hoping the orig problem was head gasket - what else would cause major water into oil problem..?
 
That's bad news!

Did you check the liners for cracks etc when the head was off? Were you careful not to dislodge the liners? There's some notes in the Haynes book warning of this.

The liners didn't budge, was really careful about that, didn't move the crank at all, so pistons never moved. Its the same problem - No 3 cyl is still not firing despite getting a good spark (due to water getting in I'm pretty sure, then its making its way past the rings into the sump I assume). I found a place near me that skims heads for £50, must be worth a shot? Even if the book says not to..?
If you look at the first pic above with the very rusty looking exhaust valve in No 3, then see that water hole just to the right of it is ALSO rust coloured - makes me think the leak is happening from there? Guess I'll take it off again and have a really close look at how flat that area is...
 
Latest update - there does appear to be a crack in the head near the exhaust valve in cyl3 - explains why it looks orange (rust in coolant), sooo all I need is a replacement head for a 1390 E6J engine - hah, can I find one? Nooooo, any ideas very welcome, tried all the online breakers but nothing back - can't be that rare surely..?
 
Look up the part number for the head itself and cross ref it to see what other engines it goes on.

Its a couple of hours of sifting through dialogies but can prove fruitful. Use the parts lookup linked in the main nav bar at the top of the screen.
