rear subframe

May I be so bold as to ask/mention, in a subject I know very little about. 'If', so much weight is reduced on the subframe in a car that already has a relatively high mounted engine.. would this not upset the balance and handling of the car?

Ray, I'm assuming this is the reason for asking the weight of the rear subframe, as I think something was mentioned previously about a carbon fibre subframe. Dont shoot me down in flames if I have all this wrong.. lol.

94kilos - for the bare subframe?!?!?!?!

What's it made of - super duper lead or a substance known only to the Krell!

As far as raising the center of gravity is concerned it will slightly raise it but given that it is down to weight being shed lower down and not added to the original weight of the car higher up, grip levels shouldnt decrease.

But surely the effects would be quite similar Godber..? You'd be removing some of the stability of the car.. rather than adding to its top heavyness..?

In effect yes but the car would be trying to change the direction of less weight hence more grip. Will probably just require a tweek to the anti roll bar.

Yes.. i see ya point with that one fella.. but wont it be almost like removing a keel from a boat.. lol Very crude way of putting it I know..

No. Thats the job of the anti roll bar. Saying that though, if the springs are supporting less weight, it would give the same effect as fitting stiffer/stronger springs which will probably give less roll........this is why you cant beat adjustable suspesion.

My rear springs are about twice as stiff as the standard ones, and I have much more weight in the rear. Where my "experts" correct with this choice?

As in twice the streangth??? How have you added so much weight t need that?

Well my engine cover weighs a ton, and the experts said stiffer springs on my coilovers would keep the car on the road better at high speeds.

Mark Fish decided what springs I needed and just swapped them at no cost for those which came with the leda coilovers.

Thats 15 stone!!!!!!

I've played catch with the subframe its nowhere near that weight unless we're talking about it with everything on it including the wheels and tyres!

Tyres in carbon could be interesting

any one on here remotly intrested in having a lighter sub frame ? if so stand up and be counted and if enough i will look into abit more

"two birds with one stone" for the Mk I owners.

I can't believe you're even thinking about this.
I'd prefer a heavy rear.

Think about your recent photography and tell me you like heavy rears. ;)
I too was looking at him, looking at them. :)
