R5 GTX lower wishbones

5-Mission

Member
My 5's all in bits at the moment, engine is out subframe is off etc etc...
While everything is out and apart I thought I'd give it all a damn good clean and get rid of any rust while it's easily accessible.
I took all rack and anti roll bar off the subframe and I wanted to remove the wishbones as well (the LH cv gaitor went on it once so the wishbone & surrounding area were well caked in shite), anyway when I undid the nuts to the 2 bolts that attach it to the subframe and turned one, it resists bigtime in the rubber bush and won't come it.
On top of that, that wishbone has lost it's spring and gone all floppy
The Haynes comic says just simply undo the nuts, remove the bolts and withdraw the wishbone! What do I do just give the bolts a damn good belt with a hammer? Has it gone floppy like that becuase I've left one of the bolts loose, I haven't tried doing it back up to see if the spring would be restored in the bushes or not.

Also I read a post by Neal mentioning buypartsby.com, and checked them out . How can they sell a complete new wishbone with balljoint for only £7.21 odd when there's people on ebay flogging balljoints alone for more?!!
Might just pay me to buy a new pair and save derusting the old shitters?:?

Yeah just get new ones.

As you say, wind the nut off right to the end and smack it to free the bolt.

I'll give 'em a belt and see if they come out. The anti roll bar will stop it flopping about when I refit that, but why did both sides originally remain stiff after I'd stripped it all? I don't want to knacker the ends the bolts by whacking them too hard, maybe if I stick a smaller punch on the end and whack that?
Why did you swap the BPB ball joints that came with the wishbones for a pair you already had? Was the quality better? You said something about it coming with both steel and brass washers I think.
Can't believe they're only £7.74 a side! I take it they don't come with the little bracket that sits on top - you know, the silly little bracket with 3 holes in it? Probably not, I'll get the Kurust out again..:);)

£7.74 each?!! hmm i might get some for my gtx then. :D

do they come with the bushes and things?

don't know about ball joints but they will definitely come with the bushes in them.

They'll also have the little plate, in fact most of the time its actualy spot welded to the wishbone.

Might be worth a call, they have a freefone number.

My r19 wishbones came with ball joints, not sure if that had implications for the r5 versions tho.

I've ordered a pair. The price was £25.83 all in. They showed the ball joints already fitted in the photo so I'm assuming they come with them - your 19 ones did didn't they Neal? You said you swapped them for another pair.

I got my old ones off, belted the back bolts with a hammer and worked them out. I bet the new f*ckers turn up tomorrow while I'm not in all day. Does anyone know if BPB deliver via carrier or royal mail? What happens if it turns out to be a carrier and I'm not in?!:?

yeah i swapped mine for some Moog ones I had. nothing wrong with the ones they came with, they just didn't match :p

they deliver by carrier (DHL iirc). if you're not in you have to pick them up from their depot. could try putting a note on the door for them to try a neighbour or leave the package round the back if they get no answer.

buypartsby.co.uk fools!

:xI've got the arse with BPB because they managed to change my house no. from the one I stated in the order to the house next door (which happens to be empty), the TWATS.
I tried ringing DHL only to be kept hanging on listening to shitty music down the phone for ages while no-one bothered answering. Upon giving up on that, I went on their website and tried entering the despatch code which then turned out not to exist. Anyway, I'd rung BPB earlier to get the code, then rung them again and they read me the delivery address, apologised and said they'd contact the holding depot where the parcel was and get them to deliver it here, won't turn up til Monday now though!:x
