5 GT Turbo R5 GTT Power Steering conversion

Hi All,
I have embarked on the above project! To fit power steering to my GTT. I have seen this post:
http://turborenault.co.uk/threads/39/page-6#post-8111
But I have questions for anyone that has done this before...
I have bought a Clio Mk I rack...
  1. Did you have to change the rear engine mount as per the above thread?
  2. Did you have to change the steering shaft?
  3. The Clio track rod ends are different. The R5 ones are not compatible (internal vs external threads). OK to fit Clio ones?
I think the answers to all questions is yes. Here's the drawing of the Clio steering shaft:

Here's the R5 shaft:

I have the Clio rack all ready to bolt up (once I have removed the seized track rod ends - grr)! I need to get some pipes made up. Pirtek should do it?? Or Hydraquip? I like the way it was done above - where a fitting was fitted to the bulkhead panel to pass the pipes through but I'm going to have to do it the other side - driver's side. I will probably punch holes through the bulkhead panel.
More photos later...

I've seen the thread, but afaik the Clio stuff is wider than the Gtt hence being used on an 11.
5's came with power steering on 1.4auto Monaco's so it's all direct fit inc brackets etc, sourcing would be a lot easier than what you have.
But if you plan to have a go,
I wouldn't think the rack is in a different position etc so you should be able to use the existing gearbox mount.
Changing the column would depend on the what you have, it either fits or doesn't. Gtt's are either square or splined into the rack.
The track rod ends, you say they are different, Gtt straight and Clio bend iirc but I think the stud that goes into the hub are the same so just use those, unless the rack is too long in which case, see my first comment.
Good luck

Ok! Thanks for the replies...

Hmmm.. I'll lay the racks alongside each other and check how wide they are.

I know I would lose some of the feel. I have already done my Gordini Turbo and infinitely prefer it with PAS. Finding a 5 with PAS is going to be a challenge, n'est pas?

See what I did there???

My ex had an automatic with PAS but I should imagine they're rare nowadays. I will check the flea bay

On the steering feel thing, the car is already compromised as it's the EBS so it already feels a little sloppy due to scuttle shake and will never be the ultimate driver's car. I have a Devil strut brace to fit, was fitted to the car when new but I've never driven the car with it fitted so I hope it will improve the handling no end!

I can confirm that the Clio rack is the same width and the ends are the same width as the GTT!
Now need a compatible steering column as the original one is splined and the Clio rack is square. I wonder if the Clio column from the donor car will fit?

I had forgotten how heavy my 5GTT steering was until I had to turn the car around on the patio at my old house (I had a massive patio). My god, doing like a 8 point turn in it nearly killed my arms/shoulders.

Well, I'll let you know how I get on! Biggest headache is going to be deciding how to mount the electric pump and to feed the hydraulics to it. I plan to fit it in the driver's side scuttle, opposite the battery. Don't really want to move the battery to that side.
As I said I did it to my Gordini Turbo and it's transformed the car! I think mine is the only RHD Gordini Turbo to have PAS fitted!

I believe that you can fit the telescopic lower half of the Clio 1 steering column to the upper half of the GTT column. I'm looking at doing this in the future and that's the route I'm going to take. Also going to use the Electric Hyd Pump from the Pug 106.

The bottom bit of the clio column comes out where the splines sleeve in to the upper section, it should just pull out. My fecker fell out when I dropped the subframe to get the gearbox out lol.

OK! An update - and a request for some help from @Big Steve - Raider ...

  1. The Clio shaft is a no-go. It is fundamentally different so I have put it back on the 'bay
  2. I have got a GTT lower shaft with the square end (my original was splined), which is good, but it came without the bearing and the rubber seal for the bulkhead! Which is bad... So need these parts. The profile of the shaft is different from my original one so can't use it... The shaft fits the Clio rack and the GTT upper shaft. So that's good
  3. Definitely need to change the rear engine mount. Steve - which mount were you referring to in the original post where you mentioned it? (Referenced at the top of this thread). What car is it from? Looks like I need the bit that bolts to the subframe and the bit that bolts to the engine... Clues as to what I need?
  4. Looks like the rack will fit no problem once the engine mount clearance issue is solved...
That's where I'm at... Words of encouragement/discouragement gratefully received!
