21 Turbo R21 Turbo QUADRA RHD Braking Problems

Hi all, i didn't post for a long, but am kinda busy, mounting my house.

Don't know if you will recognize me, but am a French guy.
Am the owner of former Malcolm Bailey's R21 Turbo Quadra RHD.

And for few months, am on trouble with brakes on this car...

In fact, no more assistance, the pedal is veeeeery hard to push.

Tried to change pump (cause it made fuses blow up)... So has been changed.
After that, changed pressure switch (bought one new).

And nothing changed, still hard.

So, for me, i'm trying my best to find few parts, but in France, it's impossible, and I really want to fix it.

So, if you can try to help me find those References, could be good :
- 7701203200 (Master cylinder). Just in case it could come from here...
- 7701203201 (Bloc electrovanne)
- 7701202800 (accumulator)

For the rest, i can find equivalent.

Thanks in advance, and take care, all

Julien

If the pedal is really hard then the accumulator is not storing the pressure in the black ball.

Is the pump running when you put the ignition on? (Under the expansion tank bolted to the bulkhead, black ball on top)
Does the pump turn off after a minute or two?

Pump is now running, the old one made fuses blow up...
but it doesn't turn off after a minute, even two... and that's my main problem.

But as you know, on a RHD, pump is located on the left, and master cylinder on the right... :dance.gif:

--> For your info, i'm working at Alpine plant... so am also trying to see with colleagues in competition, just in case...

Also, am trying to check if the hose with banjo screw is correctly mounted (upper part of the pump...).

I'm not sure if the sealing is correct, of if air is coming into the circuit... it's hard, normally, am working on R25 (am former president of Club Renault 25 Français. www.renault25.com), and sometimes on Renault Clio 1 and Renault 4.
21 turbo is not my first choice, but its story... you know, when emtions are talking for you !!

To simplify...
First, no brake assistance while driving... finished my road, back to the garage.

Arrived, fuses were dead... changed them, as soon as i turned on the contact, flash (no more fuses...).

So, bought a pump (occasion) with accumulator (occasion). Pump is turning correctly.
Pressure switch from the old pump has been removed, but screw parts remained on the old pump, so bought a new one (hard to find...). As soon as received, mounted it.

No more fuses are blowing up, but still have no assistance on pedal.

Tried to make drain of circuit, but doesn't seem to correct my problem (was sure it wasn't useful, but did it as well).

Now, i'm exploring every possibilities, without knowledge.

Thanks again for the time you will spend for me.

Regards
Julien

If the pump is running but never stopping then it's not storing the pressure in the black ball. Likely the diaphragm in the ball has lost its integrity and wont hold pressure, replace the black ball on the top with one thats good.

After 2 times when my brakes stop working according to all mesh in braking system, i chance master pump ( 22mm from Clio 172 ) and vacuum from a TXI using as support for that half of old system make a normal braking system throw out all that dangerous system ( high pressure pump etc. ) of coarse sacrifice ABS but now i feel 100% secure, of coarse is little tricky and monkey adaptation but is absolute safe, using that system for more than 3 years, i think the 21 Quadra is very stable car in all conditions and with little attention in driving there is no problem at all.

This idea, 21 quadra, thought of it... but you know, am fond of "stock" cars... So, even if it takes time, am not in a hurry, and REALLY want to make it work 100% original...

So if someone know a way to buy the accumulator, at a reasonnable price (found it on Jaguar forums, but near 400 Euros... a bit too much.

Found few references, will try...

And andy, we saw also, i remember... And indeed, was obliged to buy this car, cause always seen Malcolm coming to France with it... so want to keep souvenirs from him :D

I cannot help you with the fix but I know this car. It’s very clean! It was dry stored for years around 5km from my house.

It's a beautiful car, indeed, but a little rusty everywhere (on surface...)
This car will go to a complete restoration on next year...

Want to have the most wonderful Quadra to show to others... with english and french licence plates... To make Malcolm be present every time...

Hey Julien, I know I'm being cheeky.... but would it be possible for you to help us arrange a Club Visit to the Alpine plant after all this COVID nonsense is over. I'm sure there would be a lot of club members interested in doing this....!!? Would make a great event...!! 🙏

Just on this subject, Not sure what pressure that accumulator is exposed to... but could you not use an accumulator from a Hydraulic Suspension system (Citroen for example??) OR, having just searched on Google, This part looks to be good! It's a "brake pressure Accumulator" from a good brand (Febi). Surely you could fit this & see if it makes a difference??
