21 Turbo R21 Renix swap possible? Or custom sensors (mine are unavailable?)

Hello All,

Me yet again! As posted elsewhere, the coolant temp and air temp sensors for my car are PTC instead of the more usual NTC. The sensors are no longer made.
I managed to acquire an old stock temp sensor - the only one for sale worldwide - but I have had absolutely no luck in sourcing the correct air temp sensor (7700731057).
On ebay the last ones for sale were in 2018. Suppliers looking as having the part available don't actually stock them; the manufacturer links to their website and erroneously says they are available. When the supplier rings the manfacturer they confirm they are not available. I've tried Renault UK, I've enquired in the UK, in Spain, Germany, Lithuania, Poland and Argentina but all have led to dead ends. I've bought from 3 different sellers and then been refunded. I contacted a couple of sensor manufacturers but have had no luck. My ECU cannot apparently be

I now have 3 options;

1) Keep the car off the road and search constantly to see if someone ever offers one for sale.
2) Swap the Renix unit for a later one that is compatible with the more normal (these days) NTC sensors. However, will the mapping cause problems? How do I know my wiring will suit? I don't think my current Renix talks to the MJ3 automatic gearbox's computer, but as my Renix computer is specific to my version, perhaps it does?
3) Try and find someone who can adapt an NTC sensor to a PTC sensor. I have the Ohms range for my coolant temp sensor, but haven't yet found the resistance values for the air temp sensor.

So I'm banging my head against the wall at the moment!!!

Depends how keen you are to keep the car. I fitted a totally different standalone ECU to mine and a couple of other 21's (Turbo's), which meant I could use any sensors I wanted and just calibrated them in the ECU.

If you used the same ECU and fit yourself you can do it for under £1000. Getting a pro to fit you're looking closer to £1500 unless you pick up a used ECU (Mine is an Adaptronic E420D)

Wow, excellent work. It's somethng I'm going to have to think carefully about. There was a time when I would have given it a go but my energy and time are relatively limited (I was medically retired at 36) so it might well be a slow project if I tried it. I'll do some research on the ECU - thanks very much for coming back to me about it.

You could probably get away with fitting a mappable aei for a gtt, and doing some small wiring mods to keep it almost factory with a bit of work.

you must search in aftermarket according No of your engine type like ( example JR750 - JR 751 etc ) not with 21 Renix or with part No, there are lot of sensors but with part No of makers for you type of you engine.

Thank you very much 21 Quadra. I originally searched as you suggested. The problem is that the J7R 751 engine is listed for many sensors, even for model years for which they are not compatible. 99% of those advertised will not work with my engine. It is why the previous owner and us, until recently, couldn't get the engine to work properly as we relied on the incorrect compatability listed by most OEM sensors. Through looking at the Renix injection manual and the parts manual I was able to deternine that my year of car requires sensors that are different to most available (it's determined by engine fabrication number as well as type number). I've had to cross reference the Renix unit with the sensors through the injection manual. Any how, after contacting many different countries and suppliers, today I managed to find an old stock part through a Spanish parts business; they had sold their part but have located one in the Canary Isles (pictured). Last night I also found a Portugese seller that has one stock. So on Monday they are both giving me a price and I intend to buy a couple (both are original parts). Thank goodness for google translate!!!!!
