Quick guide, timing bottom end and head

G

Guest

Hi guys,

Can someone just explain quickly an easy way to make sure the bottom end and head are in time after you've seperated them to change a headgasket?

The gearbox isn't bolted on and the cambelt is off.

Just need a way to make 100% sure it's all in time.

Cheers

you can tell when the cams are inline due to the markers on the pulleys

for the BE, there is a mark on the flywheel and a mark on the crank pulley

if they're apart, turn the crank over until you see pistons 1 and 4 at TDC. you can then lock the crack with a pin through the front of the block.

put head back on bottom end

????

PROFIT!!

That's the plan.

I know how to time the cams that's not a problem, it's just the bottom end.

How do you know when the pistons are at TDC? n00b alert lol

piston 1 and 4 are at the very top of the block and as matt said only when they are in this position can you insert a pin through a hole in the front of the block near the flywheel which locks them in that position. also the mark on the crank pully should be at nearly 6 o clock position (varies depending on how your engine is leaning)

Engine should be like this with pistons 1 and 4 at the top of their travel (TDC)
DSC01345.webp

should be a mark on the fly wheel and a mark on the block youve got about 5mm play to get it right line them up and it will be fine

Ok cool.

Looks like i need to get a female torx socket to get the thing undone covering the hole i need to insert a pin into then.

Should i just use a random screwdriver or something? Any idea on the size of the torx bit i need to undo the thing (don't know what you'd call it lol)

personaly i wouldnt use one as its unlikeely to move mate ones the heads on and belt etc then check it agian before u do it all up

Mine was a 15/16mm bolt i think?
So in simple terms you set the timing marks on the head/cams, and set the b/e locked to 1 & 4 at TDC then fit them together?? Im at this exact stage too and dont want to mess it up.

E14 is what you need

asfb, that's basically it, nothing complicated :)

I'm not sure on the exact size of the pin you need (I use a proper locking pin), but I think it's about 8mm...

^lol

Show off :P

Well i think my bottom end is at TDC anyway so it should be ok, but i might try the locking pin method just to be sure. Mine is some kinda female torx bolt thing on mine not a normal bolt.

Someone mentioned there's a timing mark on the flywheel, i know you can see it through a hole in the gearbox. With the gearbox off, is there anything to line it up with?

not afaik - but if the head is off, you can easily align it at TDC

the female torx thing is an 'E14'

on the 19 engine ive got theres an indent on the fly and an indent on the block but as said this will be covered by the gearbox

just use an alan key through the hole to lock it mate, choose one with tightest fit
