Hello!
First i will introduce myself. I'm Bostjan from Slovenia, 25 years old, passionate about old Renault sport cars - R19 in particular.
If there will be some writing errors i apologise...my english is not perfect.
Before i post first pics of my project, here are some pics of my previous R19s.
My first one, also my first car after i got my driving license. 1995. Monaco blue, 0 rust, perfect interior, 215kkm on the clock. Had it for 2 years and then sold it to buy an Alfa Romeo 166 3.0 V6.
After selling the Alfa, i headed back to Renault. I was asking around for a R19 in good condition and i got a call from a friend. He was selling his 16 valver after owning it for almost 7 years. The price was a bit high, but i knew the car was in very good condition and came with a lot of spare parts.
1993, White, AC, lowered, Megane 16", 280mm discs in the front, full leather interior, custom exhaust, and an Megane 2.0 16V engine under the bonnet. The car drove perfectly and went like a rocket.
Unfortunately...the car ended it's career 1 month after i bought it. An oncoming car slid in to my lane. Fortunately i managed to avoid the crash with the car but the bump in the road and the gravel in the side of the road send the car in the air and of the road...after "flying" through the air for 18m i hit a couple of trees and stoped. Me and a friend were ok, couple of scratches, but ok.
The driver in the oncoming car drove of and didn't even stopped to help.
The car was scrapped.
Healing scratches over the summer. Had no real money so i got an e30 BMW for driving to work. An Alfa Romeo (My second love) 145 replaced the bmw very soon.
And here we come to the beginning of my project. In February of 2011 i was starting to look for an old love - the R19. But i wanted to build it myself and use the parts that i want so the car would look and drive the way i want!
I found this old lady from a guy i knew (sort of) from our Renault club. The car was not complete, pretty rusty, couple of things did not work...but the engine...only 184kkm on the clock. Started perfectly at -10°C, no noises, running smoothly. Paid 500€ and on 2nd of March 2011 it was at home waiting for surgery.
Some pics from the next day i got her home.
Some snow got her, so she will have to wait a bit longer...
The car was finished in September 2012, but i will post the entire project from start to finish with lots of pictures.
I will post whenever i will have the time. For now that's it.
To be continued...
[BREAK
econstruction]
The middle of March, free weekend -> Deconstruction time
First thing, the interior. Took out the seats.
All the plastic gone...working from the back to the front.
First few holes, it does not look good.
The back lights, spoiler and wiper gone.
All the stuff removed so far.
The other side.
Found this under the carpet. Probably planted, so i can tidy the car up.
Carpet gone.
Neglect - temp. sensor hanging freely inside the door, also some metal missing just above the window motor.
Front bumper attached with wire.:?
Took a brake from the interior and started a bit with the outside.
You can just notice the broken wheel bolt, still inside the hole...
Draining fluids.
While waiting to fully drain, some more deconstruction on the inside.
Trial fitting some 8Jx16" Schmidt wheels from a friends Honda.
Off with the exhaust...
...and the fuel tank.
Removed front brake calipers and disks.
Also got some replacement parts that were missing when i bought the car + some things in better condition than on the car.
The back brakes...not in the best condition.
Front suspension coming apart.
The whole front of the car lowered down.
The "cradle" with the engine unbolted and the chassis lifted up.
With some Monster energy
the engine is out.
And now, the part that i realy did not want to do - removing the side skirts.
Remember the hole from the inside? This is how it looks without the side skirts.
Left the sides for latter and continued stripping the engine bay.
Again...some new and used parts arrived.
The radio adapter and colorless stickers for the ventilation control buttons - so that the color of the light can be changed.
Used left front wing in great condition.
Side mirrors - electric + heated glass + wiring (non-heated + manual in the car) and in-dash covers for the speakers (broken in the car)
Used front bumper, again in great condition + Laguna front spoiler.
Megane 1.6 16V front brake calipers for 280mm discs + used, but good brake servo.
The car was put back on 4 wheels for the sake of transport.
Where did it go? Find out in the next update.
P.S. I think pics say more than 1000 words...so i like to post more pictures with just little comments, hope that is ok.
[BREAK=Removing Rust]
Back in 2013! Happy new year to all!
To continue the report...
The deconstruction took me from March to July due to lack of free time. I was only able to work on the car on weekends, when the weather was good.
Now, it's the end of July 2011. Me and a friend took the car, or the almost bare shell to a Slovenian Alfa club member, who offered me a pretty good price for fixing and welding the rusted parts of my 19.
He works at a Renault garage and does some work for others in his free time, so he should be perfect for an old Renault 19. He has 25+ years of experience in fixing Renaults...wise decision to take the car to him i think.
Some pictures that he took, while working on the car.
Reconstructed the bottom of the A-pillar
Meanwhile, this tired old girl gave some usefull parts for my project.
Both doors in great condition.
Also got couple of ph1 front seats in great condition.
Another pair of side mirrors, full electric and heated.
Back to the rust bucket. Made new sills.
Cleaned all the rust on the inside and protected with 2k primer.
Looking much better.
Repaired some rust under the rear bumper, just below the filler cap.
Back on the ground, protected, looking good.
Almost the same proces took place on the other side.
On the inside however...
...and under the hood...all rusted.
The other side...finished
All the dents and the bumps on the car were also repaired with car body spotter, so the body would be as straight as possible.
At the end of August all the welding was finished. 800€ latter the car was at home...but more in the next update.
Maybe, a sneak peek to the things to come...
[BREAK=Underside]
Let's move on...the date is 12.9.2011, got the car back home, all the rust treated except on the underside.
The first thing i did - taped all the holes, so that in case of rain the inside would not transform into a fish tank.
And took some pictures, before starting to clean the underside of rust.
I also proteced the new sils from the inside with this:
Put good amount on all the newly welded parts:
I have no pics of the messy rust removing, but at least the underside was solid. Some surface rust, no holes. Only pics of the underside in primer.
Meanwhile, i got the front cradle from a Megane in great condition with 2mm thicker ARB than from a standard 16V...will be a good edition to the handling.
I had a spare cover at home...painted it matt black.
Also the petrol tank de-rusted and in primer:
A coat of body sealant...
At this stage i got the wheels back on, so the car can be transported to my uncle's garage for the winter - the plan was that the car should be finished in the next 6-8 months.
Continues next time...
[BREAK=Sanding & Primer]
Now, when the car was in the garage, the body was fully striped.
Whole body and all teh panels were sanded with 240 grit sanding paper, outside and inside.
When the sanding was done i applied the first coat of grey primer.
Inside was painted matt black, because its universal color and everything will be covered anyways.
I also decided to put some underbody higher up in the engine bay, because the car will sit close to the ground and some more protection would not hurt.
All the other parts and panels were also primered.
As i let the primer settle for 2 weeks, a had time and got some more shopping done. The oil temp. and pressure gauge.
Button for opening the boot - taken from an Alfa Romeo 166.
Mocal oil cooler with thermostat and all the hoses.
KW V1 Inoxline.
Chip for the engine...i sold it later because it was more for race use than for the road. (Idle on 2.5kRPM, redline at 8.7kRPM)
More...next time.
