i have tonight decided in a mad fit to start removing the driveshafts as both my front abs targets have several teeth missing!the car drives fine(when i use it which is very rarely)but has a pedal which keeps pulsing and an abs light which never goes out,the rear targets are spot on but the fronts are crap,i got one shaft out tonight, will take it to work tommorrow for the rte to check play etc,i think i will go for a new pair of shafts with targets,i do hope this works, what should i use to clean the front sensor faces?also i will change both ball joints whilist i,am at it,the worst part of getting the shaft out was the original 2 peice roll pin,the rest was fine, maybe i should change the gearbox driveshaft oil seals?is this easy enough to do,cheers, dave

so are the teeth connected to the hub? cause ive never looked. not long had the car and the ABS dont work cause a plugs been disconnected in the engine bay. Brakes fine as it is but i wanna get it working.

get it sorted jay ,quickly!

get looking straight away jay,abs is there for a reason, the 21 turbo is a heavy big 4 door car it needs as much help as it can get to stop!i,ve been a bit lazy with mine because i,ve done around 50 miles in 6 months!!!!!!!i never use her and walk to work,if used more regular its a must, several people in the past have pointed out how abs saved them from distaster,ABS was standard on every 21 turbo, its there to help save you,get it looked at STRAIGHT AWAY!,the target rings are on every hub, they have a common problem with rusting teeth, this tricks the sensors into thinking there is a problem.hence the light, the sensors themselves play up but not as much i think, disconnected abs wires is naughty, connect them up and look deeper into the problem, after all,its your life?powerful car, crap brakes, result, well you know what could happens on a wet winters day??????????????????????????????????if after replacing the d/shaft the light is still on,i will look at further things, its just the importance factor that hits me

Thanks mate.

Thats my new main priority now.

My mate tells me that he clean up the targets and the abs lasted all of day or so. That tells me it is them. So it sounds like i new new ones.

If i brought a new drive shaft, do they come with hubs fitted, and therefore targets? Also same for rear hubs. Renault only? How much about?

How much of an % improvement do you get wiyth ABS? (Not that it matters just want to know, its gonna get fixed regardless)

Much appreciate these questions answered.

Cheers tungsten21 for the info.

Jay.

ABS

21T ABS is nothing shy of awesome. It's saved my skin enough times for me to lose count.....on a dry road im sure the deceleration could be measured in G-Force.
I Spent a week or so figuring out how to fix mine and now it works it was all worth it.

Basically you need to figure out if its a sensor fault or a target problem. The sensor points at the target and detects the rotation of the toothed rings. Damage to the rings leads to the ABS computer thinking the wheel has locked and releasing the brakes even under light braking or no braking, it then figures something is wrong and turns the system off. I Suspect this is whats wrong with your car jay as it can be a bit dangerous as before it disarms itll almost turn the brakes off, so unplugging a sensor would keep it permanently off.
Having a sensor out as said above will turn the system off immediately.

So, does your light stay on all the time? Sensor out.

Does your light go out, then reappear usually accompanied with a pulsing in the brake pedal just before hand? Damaged or rusted targets.

Now the best bit.....replacement parts.
Front targets are available from Renault at ?40+ each.
Rears are only available new as part of a whole new rear hub assembly which you should get for about ?70 non OE or ?130ish OE.
Sensors are available but retail at about ?120 EACH
Second hand is the best option, but finding decent targets is a mare and getting them off the shafts/hubs is even worse as they are interference fit (pressed on). I'm getting pretty good at it but you need certain tools, and a LOT of patience.
Getting second hand semsors is even worse as they sieze into the hubs. Honest to god, they may as well have stuck em in with chemical metal. I Can get them out BUT it requires destruction of the hub around it, thats how bad they stick in. Removing the old sensor also destroys it but as its fooked anyway that dont matter :D, alternatively replace the whole hub section with sensor complete.
Also you have to find the dodgy sensor too, which should be possible with a decent digital multimeter and help from a sexpert like me

Lets put it this way, you'll hate fixing the ABS system, you'll swear and cry and want to give up (probably lol) but goddamn its WELL worth it!!

damm.

Still its gotta be done and i dont let things like this beat me. Gotta connect that plug up and go from there i think. The ABS light never comes on. ever.

My brakes at the mo just work like a normal non abs car.

Im gonna sort this and buy the bits if possible.

Isnt there anyway of treating the targets to stop them rusting?

Cheers dave.

BEAT THIS

none of you can beat my quadra's abs system

turn it on - light comes on

then when it should go out - what does mine do

yes - it goes DIM!!!

not out, nor stay on! IT GOES DIM

and with the quadra you can get it to tell you whats wrong - and yep - it tells me NOTHING is wrong!!

stupid renaults!!!!

The ABS light never comes on because someone will have removed the bulb so it'll pass the MoT

daves right, the vicar speaks no lies!

the vicar is dead right, you will spend money and the light might still come back, but you have got to get it sorted, put in my order today for 2 complete d/shafts(at least 4 in stock uk,i checked!)looking at the remains of the target rings it might be worth thinking about a complete shaft!!!they are ?85 each plus the vodka but if you can get them trade of course you will get some discount, you have really got to remove the shaft to get proper look at the ring, you might find the u/j,s shot when removed or the gaitors?also ordered a pair of ball joints for the sake of it,but at work there ?40 each retail, have been told that the shafts come with the sensors,i will find out tommorrow when i go into work!

Targets....

You'll notice in the 'for sale' section i'm selling a set of 4 targets that are good, be a lot cheaper than buying new ones.

I'll fit em if required, either bring me the complete parent component or drive the car down i'm not fussed. I'm cheaper on labour than Renault too

I Know the targets can be changed, as said before ive done it to mine already but it aint easy getting it on without damaging anything.
