Plenum removal Phase 1

Snails

New Member
I've had a coil go, it is not 1, 2 or 3. Meaning it is one of the hidden ones. How do you remove the Plenum on a phase 1?

I couldn't find the answer via a search.

How the arsing hell do you gain access to the 2 that the plenum pivots on at the back? I need to loosen them ever so popular slightly.

Okay, I managed to get it all off, swapped the fronts with the back, put it all back together again, tested the coils and found the faulty one,

However, the car sounds much louder than before and there is another, whirring noise that doesn't sound usual. Off to the garage I think.

I should imagine that you have either snapped one of the breather/vacuum pipes around the throttle body which are VERY brittle or have a loose connection/disslodged pipe somewhere. I snapped my hoses and instead of replacing them with an OEM parts that will do the same, I converted them to rubber.

Oh dear. What do the breather vacuum pipes look like?

I will have another look again tomorrow. Check all the ones I can see an go from there.

Thanks :D It has also, just occurred to me that when i found a failed coil, I assumed it was the only failed coil. I checked 5 out of 6 [smilie=doubt.gif] Silly me.

They are around 10-12mm thick, black plastic and not smooth. More like corigated.

Thanks for this. Eventually found the breather pipe you described had come out of the section of rubber pipe it joins to. This came out when I had lifted the plenum the first time.

It now all works and sounds normal!
