Phase II - Summer & Winter Tyres

GlowRed

New Member
Hi,

I'm an new owner and after looking at previous posts, the knowledge base and various tyre web sites I'm having problems understanding the recommended tyres for my Phase II V6.

Can anyone tell me the best / recommended tyres for Summer?

Can anyone tell me the best / recommended tyres for Winter?

Please include the sizes / specification.

Any help much appreciated.

Summer - Michelin Pilot Super Sport

Winter - "Computer says no..."

I read that one member had put the following winter tyres on:

Continental Contiwintercontact TS830P

Fronts: 225 / 40 R18 92V
Rears: 245 / 40 R18 97V

I ran my supersports in the winter, but didn't drive in the snow (which I think I told you on the phone), was no problem to be honest in the cold, rain etc

I sold the car to my wife saying it will be great in the Winter, even the snow.

I've ordered the Continental Winter Tyres and I'm sure they will be fine.

Now I just need the full spec of the Summer tyres.

I put some on mine in the summer, so definitely can. The place has got a pair in still actually as there was a mix up. Incidentally they're the Mini GP size too so I'll be switching when I burn these runflats through :race:

The original vee Michelin 205 tyres are unavailable. Supersports didnt ever think there was an issue as they are a lot more recent developent. Is that where you are confused?? As long as its michelin its still oem in effect ;)

IMO Michelin Super Sports are just about the best summer tyres available at the moment.....so will definitely be switching to them, possibly even before the Falken 452's that came with the Vee when I bought it have been used up.

Yep, I'm in the same boat as Dulan, mine are not worn yet but will probably put some Super sports on before next summer.

I didn't wait for the hankook Ventus that the previous owner put on to wear, just went straight for supersports. They are great tyres and must be one of the first things to go for when anyone is thinking of improving the handling of the Vee.

Totally agree Matt. I find the Falkens are perfectly okay in the dry except for the initial understeer (I believe) they induce on turn-in, which I have learnt to drive around, and since I don't track the Vee, that was perfectly fine for the type of use the Vee got. However, given that a track excursion may be on the cards in 2014 (Origine RS), I think the change to Pilot Super Sports will have to be made.

The only thing about the supersports is they're quite soft so you can get through them quite easily. Think I went through a set of rears in 6k

Bearing this in mind I would still go for them every time

IMO a lifespan of 6K for road use on a car like the Vee is fine, which I guess for most owners would be 2-3 years or so of (spirited) motoring. Guess the grip and feedback one gets from such a tyre outweighs its relatively short lifespan.

How are the grip levels in damp/greasy and wet conditions?

Hard to say as a comparison as I've only had supersports on, but I found that they gripped really well in all conditions. Probably helped that I had KWs on too.

The only 'moment' I had was a patch of mud I didn't see and went sideways, but caught it as soon as I hit tar mac again
