petrol light

The handbook just says:

Low fuel level warning light

If it lights up or remains lit, fill up with fuel as soon as possible.

A few owners suggest there is approx 30 miles left when the light comes on.

I'd guess very little, I never trust the gauge personally, once it gets down to about 75 miles on the trip I always find a shell garage :)

Never even seen the fuel light on mine!

An ex vee owner told me that his car once failed to start due to an empty tank before the yellow fuel light had even illuminated! The above post is definitely sound advice.

European directive states that the fuel level in the tank when the warning light comes on must be sufficient to travel 50 km.

Nigel.

When me, Mossy and Matt found the liquid out of fuel on the M1, it took 2 gallons to get it turning over.

if it coughs and comes to a halt ignore the above! its empty. if after fueling up the light remains lit, put more in (you must be tight). if the light stays off, the bulb is faulty, as these guzzle fuel that much it must be lying.

the funny thing is i just wanted to no if the light actually worked as the poxt thing goes up and down then leaves the scale and you think is there actually any reserve petrol all that money and renault still cant get it right thats tight my freind poxy french still love it though

The light normally comes on when you're in the red. Driven a few miles with it on and never sounded unhappy. I don't make a habit of it though.

p.s punctuation

Done about 10 miles with the light "on". It didnt have hicups or anything so would guess you have enough to get to a garage under normal conditions.

I was told its best to keep the tank above 2-3 gallons otherwise your fuel pump will rot away

Thats what happened to mine when i first got it, cos the dealer had the car on the forecourt for months with low fuel so it wasnt fully immersed. When they took the fuel pump out and shook it, it sounded like sand was in it which was actually rusted metal!

Had also heard that running fuel damaged the fuel pump in some way but dont quote me on this just the first point

I bet that's what's wrong with mine. The fuel pump has had it and it did sit on my driveway for a couple of months with next to no fuel in it. I never even gave that a thought.

Yeap could be - cant remember if its in the handbook or their technical manual but somewhere says keep above 2 gallons.

My car had an intermittent misfire 3.5-4k even after new coils and stuff

Clarkiev6 told the dealer to use a clip to measure the fuel pressure and bingo found a problem. When they took the tank out flaky rusted metal was floating in the tank and the pump was completely rusted to bits!

Needed to clean out the tank and filter

I've never run my tank below half if can help it since ;)

You can get caught between a "rock and a hard place".
No fuel in the tank can lead to some corrosion but leaving fuel in the tank for a long time isnt advisable either as fuel will degrade over time.
There are all sorts of weird and wonderful additives in Gasoline these days now that TEL (Tetra ethyl lead) is banned as an octane booster cum anti knock compound. Think that fuel tended to be more "stable" before Lead was banned.

I've run out of petrol twice within 5-10 miles of the red light coming on! Sooo embarrassing, lol.

Few interesting posts about leaving the sitting for a while. Had mine parked up for well over a year there and recently completed its major service + extras. But never thought about the fuel pump. Just recently while driving when my petrol is low, the car does judder a little or hesitates! And last week a heard a very feint whine, which when I give it a little throttle stops!

So spike how much are these pumps? Lol

if you send me your sender unit, i will swap the pump for £120 , test it for pressure and volume and post it back to you all in provided there are no problems, problems come at an extra price! i do have a spare sender for both ph2 and ph1 which i will swap with you for a little extra to save you waiting, would need a depo on this as they are 400 quid. also have the correct tool for getting the top off without smashing it to bits, this i will loan in with the deal.

My computer reckons there's 5 litres left and the light isn't on yet. The gauge is nigh on bottom.

Maybe my suspected fuel pump issue (stuttering/flat spots/clunking when low on fuel) is in fact me just running out of petrol? :tumble:
