Parts required for a turbo conversion?

Seeing as you are all such knowledgable people would somebody who knows about turbo conversions be able to give me a list of all the main parts I would need for a conversion? Also, if some of the parts can be taken from other cars could you also let me know.

you'll need:

turbocharger (T25 for drivability)
exhaust manifold
some sort of management, emerald/dta/kms/omex (stay away from megasquirt)
larger injectors, fuel pressure regulator
map sensor
oil feed from oil pump and return to the sump
intercooler and piping
oil cooler if oil temps are rising above 110deg centigrade
oil pressure, and boost gauge

make sure the cooling system is up to scratch, lower the compression by 'dishing' the pistons, try to avoid decompression plates or double head gaskets wherever possible

dont forget that you'll also need to consider the clutch/drivetrain as well.

wideband lambda gauge is always handy to make sure that the engine isn't running lean, as it will cause problems with detonation

dont expect to run silly boost, 7-10psi will be plenty and generally give a good 40-50bhp increase in power.

Without dropping the compression ration what are the options with regards how much boost you can run and what sort of power you can expect?

With reagards the head gasket will I need to use an uprated one or will the standard one be ok up to certain levels of boost?

What parts can be taken from the likes of an R25 turbo?

thas a cheap way run low boost no need for much internal work, lowcomp pistons and forged conrods would never be a no no though

dish um and ask for trouble

Cheers mate. So roughly speaking what sort of boost/power can you run on standard pistons and how much boost/power could you run with proper low comp pistons and forged conrods?

I'm still not sure what I want to do tbh as I'm considering going jap or vag (again, lol) but I always seem to stick to clios in the end and really a turbo is another one of these ones I want to tick off the list if you know what I mean.

Also, does anyone know of any decent places online to read up a bit more about turbos, how they work and more of the technical side of things as its something I'm not too knowledgeable at the moment.

5psi is what most people run on a 19 with standard pistons

low comp the bottom it and the limit is prolly 4 times that

i think 5psi is 180-200brake more than enough for a fast road car speak to chet

Running 8.0:1 on my engine and at 6psi its running 179.9bhp. so like said above dont lower it and will see great power but then limits to you higher up. Mines built to take more than 1bar apart from the map dont like it though

Cheers guys, trying to read up a bit more about this and gradually working out whats what. As things stand my hybrid has been RR'd at 170bhp, so if I were to run say about 5 psi, or whatever you could recommend on standard pistons, what sort of power would I be looking at?

Ideally I would like to go the whole hog and do a high boost conversion but at the moment I don't think I can really justify spending that sort of money.

Turbo conversion on the engine is a lot better than going back to carb 8v engine, or injection 8v engine. 16v turbo is a much better conversion to do. A lot easier for power and a lot more reliable once mapped properly. 200bhp out of the 1.4 engine is going on the boundries of it being reliable. And the 21T is just a big barge and has no real speed from it. Though they say 300bhp from it is possible though, dont know how reliable that would be though. Plus with the 16v NA revs a lot easier, does not have any lag and pulls all through the gears. so feels a lot faster than the 5 gt turbo.

I did (and still am tbh) think of selling the hybrid and getting something else, but at the same time I've always fancied a clio turbo for something a bit different and so would quite like to give it a try. Wouldn't really be interested in a 5 GTT, I like them just don't really fancy owning one, or a 21T as I'm just not a fan of them.

Its still up in the air just now whether I'll go for it or not, the main problem is insurance. My current insurers won't cover a turbo conversion and I don't really want to cancel as I'm already about 7 months into the policy.

Does anyone have any experience of low compression high boost conversions?

I've been offered all the parts to do this, capable of running up to 15 - 16psi and am seriously considering it but just want to get opinions on what they are like to drive. I would imagine it would make it very laggy as there would be less power than before with no boost and then a lot more when the turbo kicks in?

mmm, and I would imagine there would be some pretty major traction issues as the hybrid is bad enough at the moment if the road is even slightly damp. The problem is that whilst it may not be the best for driving I love the idea of having an absolute moster of a clio as I love the whole sleeper thing, but the sensible thing would probably be high comp low boost.

Out of interest if I were to replace the pistons with forged low comp ones what else would have to be replaced in the process of fitting them? I know it would be at least the big end bearings, piston rings, timing belt, head gasket but what other smaller bits and bobs so that I can try and price things up.

Does anyone have any idea of the approximate power figures I could expect running at say 15psi with low comp pistons and also for say 5psi with the standard comp ratio? I know figures aren't the be all and end all but its just so that I could get an idea of what to expect from each option.

5psi is around 190bhp, certainly drives like 190bhp with all the torque

At the end of the day it easy to build an engine more powerful than the gearbox will take so you either build a nice 200bhp engine that'll last or a monster than will eat gearboxes. You can of course buy a sadev box for about 5k which is rated to 300bhp but that's 300bhp NA without the huge torque figures that would come with a turbo

My advice? Low boost on a rebuilt standard engine with good management.

I'm doing a low compression ratio engine purely because i have all the bits here to do it now and it will be my 4th car, even so i won't be running it much more than 200bhp. If this is your daily i'd consider your options strongly

Yeah, all very valid points. The conversion would be on what is currently my daily driver but if I do the conversion and depending on how summer earnings go I could possibly get another run around, or I can always use my old mans car as he doesn't need it during the day.

I've got a month or so before I need to decide either way so I suppose I'll just have a think about it, main problem is I'm starting to get my mind set on a high powered turbo clio and when I do that I tend to just forget other options and do it even if it takes me a while, lol.

Mine will be going on the rollers running 1bar. I know its going to be insane, but thats why i built it like it, but as said not useable on the road, thats why going to turn it down. or other thing is plumb the boost controller into the ECU so can control boost in first few gears. All ways of getting around the problems. Tyres will be going for toyo r888s and will be picking up a LSD. But all those things are in the future. Should update my project but heres the link to it
