Old stuff

As many parts are becoming scarce from Renault.

Should it be mentioned that various parts will have been sitting on a shelf for 15 years and may well be past their best?

You might be better off sourcing something non genuine that's been produced much more recently.

Depends what it is?

I'd use a balljoint quite happily, in fact, i've got new 21 parts that have been sat with me that long let alone before that. but...a timing belt, tyres or oil seal? maybe not.

But then how do you date the parts?

I guess if you had the purchase invoice or some parts may have a date on the packet. I do recall a recent post were a chap got a new tyre and it was older than his car!

Tyres are clearly marked with month and year on them, there were a load of cheap Michelin Pilots for sale, all of them over 4 years old so guaranteed leathery! Cambelts likewise, an old belt in a box for 10 years will be worse than the same belt that is on a car and run, it will settle to shape, degrade and harden so best avoided. Metal components, unless corroded, don't have the same issues as rubbers and greases which do potentially have a finite shelf life.
