oil leak! theres a surprise.........

I

illzlee

we had a new clutch fitted to our 21 about 2 months ago after asking a dodgy local mechanic to try and trace the slipping problem (suspected it was oil on the clutch face)............lo and behold he paid his iraqi workman to fit a new clutch, handing us the bill he announced "it will probably slip again as theres so much oil down there":tantrum:

so, is anyone aware of a common seal to go? i'm presuming it's the gearbox to engine block seal as the clutch only slips after prolonged driving (thinking the oil thins with the temp and seeps into the 'box).

is this seal common to need replacin? don't want to pay to have the box off again if it ain't likely:kinkyzip:

Apparently oil can seap from the back of the engine block , and into the housing.

I am sure Dave / Lee / Andy / Craig / Lyn will be along to tell you more.

I hav e abit of a leak from the bellhousing area as well. Someone suggested it could be the crank main seal.

Crank main seal, dizzy seal, Head gasket, Primary shaft seal, primary shaft guide seal....

What kind of oil is it?

has anyone done a crank main seal? is it easier for the box to come out or engine? heard the box can be a right b*tch to get in and out...:bash:

DONT take the engine out until you're SURE it's the mainseal. I've NEVER needed to replace a crank rear seal due to leakage.
Check the back of the head for HG or dizzy seal leaks (It runs down the back of the block), Check the dipstick-block seal, turbo oil return pipe, and identify if its engine or gearbox oil thats leaking (they smell different).

well my mate has had the 21 for a month, running it everywhere without any slippage. gonna have it up in the air for a good clean and look round next weekend to make a decision what to do. :dunno:
