Oil leak after oil change on Renault 5 Supercinq automatic

Hi Folks!

My neighbour changed the oil in my Renault 5 Supercinq on Monday and now it has an oil leak. I wondered if perhaps he didn't tighten the bung/screw plug that seals the sump drain. I discovered it about an hour ago and he is out at present when he returns I will let him know I also rang the local garage the earliest that they can look at it is tomorrow. I just wondered if forum members have had this happen to them and if it was the sump plug and if so how did they rectify it?

Regards

Harley

Re: Oil leak after oil change on Renault 5 Supercinq automat

Dear Sparkie,

Thanks, it was the washer he took it into the car parts shop down the road and the chap there took one look at it and said "A Renault" ! My neighbour changed the washer (cost 20p for a new one) and topped the oil up and ran the engine for 10 mins then topped it up again and touch wood it is ok. The chap in the car parts shop advised my neighbour that a new washer should always be used when changing the oil. My neighbour isn't used to Renaults he has a Ford Ka but he now knows that next time a new washer is required.

Re: Oil leak after oil change on Renault 5 Supercinq automat

I remember the same problem with my Le Car 2 turbo all those years ago.
I decided to buy 5 or so copper washers and carry them in the ash tray so I had them to hand and did not loose them.
The ash tray was never used for fag ash.
No smocking allowed in the car,
result NO fag burns any where.

Re: Oil leak after oil change on Renault 5 Supercinq automat

I have decided to buy a few copper O ring washers from the car parts shop just down the road as they are 20p each but hadn't thought of where to store them that's a great idea Read and I don't think that the ashtray in my Supercinq has been used the car was very very clean inside when I bought it so when I get them will put them in there!

Well that is the first useful comment I have made in a while.
I remember I kept the sump key there as well.

Have you been on holiday? You were quiet fore a week or so.

Re: Oil leak after oil change on Renault 5 Supercinq automat

Dear Read,

No I haven't been on holiday in April my Micra K11 automatic was rammed by a speeding driver who was attempting to overtake me without paying due care and attention when there was a 4x4 coming the other way. I received neck injuries and had to postpone the exams that I was supposed to take at Uni in May to the first week of August. Having sat and passed them I have been having some down time and starting to get ready for the new academic year and tomorrow I am going to the Greenbelt Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse in my Supercinq as two of the people that were very helpful with my dissertation which I researched and wrote last academic year are giving talks so I am going to buy them a pint in the Jesus Inn there to say thank you to them. A holiday in my supercinq would be nice maybe next year!

Regards

Harley

Re: Oil leak after oil change on Renault 5 Supercinq automat

Reminds me to tighten up my sump plug a little. I'm dripping oil despite adding a brand new washer during the oil change at the weekend. You can normally use the washers a couple of times before they get too squished. I didn't tighten mine up enough.

To do the oil change I had to borrow a tool - the plug was so tight I couldn't get it undone. Previous washer had clearly been used too many times and needed a monkey to seal up.

Re: Oil leak after oil change on Renault 5 Supercinq automat

Well yesterday I attended the Greenbelt Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse in Henri Tudur II and did a round trip of approx. 226 miles and he behaved wonderfully and got me there and got me back. I went because both Rev Pete Owen Jones and Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch were giving talks and they have both helped me with the dissertation that I have recently written for my History degree and the plan was to buy them a drink in the Jesus Arms afterwards to say thank you. However, this plan went belly up as Pete was also due to give a talk on Friday evening but this had to be cancelled as his car had broken down and that talk was put back to Saturday after his scheduled talk. Diarmaid being a gentleman accompanied back to my car but we could not find it because it was a very large car park whilst searching I realised that I had parked further up the hill so we started up the hill and bumped into Pete Owen Jones on the way back to his car Diarmaid then left us and Pete helped me look and I spotted HTII further up the hill when we reached the row where Pete had parked. I thought it rather amusing that it took a crippled antiquarian (me), a leading historian who is also a knight of the realm and Ye Extreme Vicar to find a Renault 5! :D
