OBD 2 (II) code readers

Just thought I would share my joy at a purchase I made on ebay. It was an OBD 2 code reader that cost me £27 and it came from the USA. A few weeks ago I had a coil pack go and was wondering if there would be an easy way to find which one. I was told to try one of these and sure enough I plugged it in and up came the code to state misfire and even told me which cylinder!! The amount of codes this thing can read is great and I am pretty sure it will save me a bit of time in the future.

Just thought for all you DIY'ers this is a cool piece of kit.

Hi Si,

I have a keen interest in EFI systems and the inner workings.

Can you provide further details of the OBD II reader ? Does it cycle through all current diagnostic codes stored or current values or is it sophosticated enough to provide history of a stored code ? ANy details of the brand or pictures would be great.

OBD II systems tend to provide some form of data logging, can this reader access the logs or allow the data stream to be fed to a laptop ?

Anyone else connected the Vee ECU up to a laptop for real-time data logging ?

Also does the Vee have a mechanism for providing stored codes via the engine light on the dash ? This is usually done by jumping connectors in the diagnostic port and reading the sequence of lamp flashes ;-)

This one was a way basic model. But yes it does read stored codes and current ones. You can also reset them - With the engine not running I had a code and it was for the oil pressure which went off as soon as the engine was started. The handheld unit displays a code which you match in a pocket book and it gives the details of the problem. Another guy at work has an all singing all dancing one and this displays the code and what it means on the screen.

On ebay you also get software and leads to allow you to use a laptop and montior performance aswell and codes. You would have to make sure this suits renault as there are so many out there now.

I am looking to an all in one solution as my Alfa 156 GTA has an OBD port aswell. Someone managed to connect a mobile phone to run the software - That would be a handy tool!!

Is that link the correct one I would need for for a MK1 V6 ie the U380 OBD2......I assume that is the one you bought?
