NODIZ Ignition Management Thread

Hi All,

I just thought you'd like to know about my current "project". I surround the word in quotes, because it's a project for my cheque book...

I'm paying someone to do the work as I'm rather busy at the moment!

The project is to replace the original Renix ignition module on my Gordini Turbo with a modern, mappable ignition system. I have chosen NODIZ:

It uses a Ford 4 cylinder coil pack like this:

The first challenge has been that there's nowhere to mount a standard trigger wheel for the pickup. I could have used the existing flywheel segments, but they are symmetrical - replicated twice on the flywheel so I would need to retain the distributor to send the sparks to the correct cylinders. I wanted to get rid of the distributor.

So, I had a custom trigger wheel made up! It has been welded to a camshaft pulley. It's a (36-1) x 2 trigger wheel. The standard trigger wheel is 36-1. It has to be (x 2) because the camshaft revolves at half engine speed and I wanted to have a solution where we didn't need custom firmware for the NODIZ to work with the trigger wheel.

So far, my mechanic has fitted the trigger wheel:



Next job is to fit the sensor.

I'm really excited about the NODIZ as it's a 3D mappable solution - it can be mapped according to engine revs and other stuff - like manifold pressure, water temperature, inlet temperature, etc.
 
are you a member of r5 gt turbo group on facebook? ash findler has a gt turbo base map on this system to get it up and running. will work on gordini too...
 
i did look into running my efi project from the camshaft but was concerned about how much back lash was in there. instead i had a spare flywheel modified.

Yes, I realise running off the flywheel would have been preferable. However, I don't have the time to remove engine or gearbox at the moment and my car is otherwise running fine (for now at least)! If the camshaft idea doesn't work I will have to resort to the flywheel. I am hopeful that the camshaft will give stable timing. I think that it should be stable when accelerating or cruising. Maybe not quite so on the overrun.

My car has power steering fitted, which makes removing the engine and gearbox even more time consuming than otherwise and my mechanic is rather scared of removing it all and breaking stuff as he does so! I actually don't blame him! Paying him to do that would also cost quite a bit and it also required custom firmware on the Nodiz to count the non-standard flywheel segments.

My guy is using an ABS sensor from a Peugeot as the trigger sensor. He has made a mounting plate for the coil module and MAP sensor, and fed the wires through the bulkhead.

Car is not yet running as there are a few other things to do first. I am also asking him to fit an uprated alternator if he can. My PAS is electro-hydraulic so takes significant power to run. I'm also excited by the idea of having a much smaller, efficient, modern alternator.
