That looks genuinely terrible, how have they got it so wrong?
£40k too, nobody in their right mind with any knowledge of cars will go for that.

Do you think it looks a more interesting prospect than the Meganes?

God no Kett, god no!
The megane is cheaper and in the real world, just as quick. I say "quick" as speed seems to be all Renault have to sell this thing on.
Also knowing some of my mates who like to poke fun at my Clio, theyd be constantly opening the rear doors (considering theres no back seats why does it even have any).

Every other car in that line up is truly epic, the Clio doesnt deserve to be there.

Supposing i had £40k here and needed rid of it quickly, focus RS, Civic Type R (if i could stomach the stying), Golf R edition what ever its called that just set the ring record (if i didnt want any styling at all)...hell even a pre owned GTR as follows would leave me change :

(and thats not even the cheapest one for sale!)
you know which would have the better build quality. Honestly they should supply it with a paper bag so the drivers can hide their faces.

I think the issue is the base car, the sooner Renault move away from the 200turbo and onto the Mk5 the better.
This new version is just Renault admitting they got it so wrong with the Mk4 RS.

The positives however and im scraping the barrel here.
1) Manual gearbox, thank god Renault havent completely lost it
2) Speed, yes it'll be bonkers fast and yes it will probably break the ring record (but again if you want speed....any of the above).

I wish they had reversed the grid, and then taken that photograph............would have been more pleasing to the eye.

I think it's great Renault sport are making the effort and it should be great to drive but so is a Megane 275 at £25k! and if they do the no rear seats on the Clio, as they did with the R26.R which didn't sell out, then it restricts the market hugely. So, unlike the V6.... if you have space for the rear seats keep them and expand the potential customer base by a thousand percent!

I can't see this coming to fruition. Own goal by Renault by creating a 5-door shell only. This would be worthy of consideration in bespoke 3 door shell guise but I can't see that happening.

It lacks USPs to command £40k as it stands.

Hats off to Renault though. Could see this nailing the fwd 'ring record.

...trouble is - I'm not interested in spewing £40k on a front wheel drive 4-cyl car. Bragging rights or not!

I must be in the minority on this one as I think it looks great!

Is it worth 40k? No not really, but then neither were the likes of the A1 Quattro Sport & Beetle RSI (50k back in 2001)

As with other limited run cars it will become a classic & be highly sought after.

If it were my 40k id probably be looking for a 1m coupe though.

Fair play to Renault for trying something crazy (again) - it reminds me of the MINI GP, but with a ton more engineering to fit in the power plant and getting all that power to stick to the road efficiently. I can understand why it would cost so much.

Still fond memories of their F1-powered Espace.

Still seems odd that 'a 2ltr power plant and manual box' singles this out a special development.

Goes a long way to highlight how bonkers the Vee was...

...anyone taking bets on a Vee hitting £50k this year?

From an interview with the boss man it is very likely to go into production as it was conceived with that objective. He said they looked at doing a mid-engined car like the Clio V6 but it would "be too heavy and our expertise is in front engined front wheel drive cars" Of course, they are about to launch the Alpine so they have already done just that so didn't need another one.
This Clio 16 is going to be all about the price and it has been quoted as 45000 euro which is more like £35,000 than the 40k quoted by journalists. If they price it under 35k then it has a good chance as a specialist car that collectors could buy whilst completely ignoring that you can get the same mechanical package in a better looking Megane Coupe with rear seats for £10k less

To be honest Renaultsports future isnt looking great to me. All these years they've been at the peak of the hot hatch market.
Now you look at all the competition with all these hyper hatches / ultra hatches what ever you wish to call them....look what they cost!

This new crazy Clio regardless of them making or not suggests the sort of price for such performace.
Theres talk of the new Megane having 4 wheel steer, lord knows what that will cost considering what the current one costs if you want anything other than the bog standard 250.

I'm looking at the cost of all these "super hatches" on the market, its getting silly now as they are armed with some advanced tech.
Will there even be any more affordable hatches out there? I remember growing up and it was all about Saxo VTS and the amazing little 106 GTI's which were even at the time very affordable.

These days the equivalent popular hatchback (Fiesta ST maybe...Twingo 133 even) is going to set you back close to £20k if you buy new and they arent even fast when you consider the higher end of the market.

Pricing has gone bonkers in the last few years because of all the extra "kit" that the component manufacturers convince the car companies they need and then gullible people feel they have to have the latest thing. I passed a Volvo XC90 on the motorway and as I went past a red light flashed in the end of the door mirror. (blind spot detector no doubt) How bloody distracting for the driver. I thought that's what the convex glass bit at the end has done for the last few decades? Have Volvo drivers lost the use of their neck???
Shame they can't all take a leaf out of Mazda's book with the MX-5. Astonishing value at £20k. after inflation it's thousands less than the earlier versions.

I think it's a great looking thing! The want is strong. But at £35k it needs to have rear seats especially in a 5 door car.

Having 2, 2 seater cars would never happen for me!

I really hope prices don't hike up to 50k before I got my arse in one.

If priced at around £35K like the 275 Trophy R, no back seats, cage, usual Ring spec and if they recapture the FWD Ring Record they should sell them all easily and it will be instantly collectible.
