Newbie Exhaust question

Hello all

Please excuse my naivety but im new to the V6 ownership so have a simplistic question.

I want to keep my car 100% standard and am not interested in fitting an aftermarket system, however I would be interested in a little more external noise.

If there was anything simple I could do to Temporally improve the noise, that would be perfect.

For example, remove cats, replace with blank de-cat pipe, and can just swap back at MOT/Sale time.

That’s just an example but thought id see if there was anything that was simple to do and easily changed back to OEM for some extra Aural excitement (too much to ask?)

Hi Kieran,

You could

- Decat but it isn't a simple swap on and off job - takes ages. Plus you would have to get downpipes made up for he vee.

- replace collector box with pipes or remove padding from inside collector.

- change Oem exhaust for something louder. This is by far the easiest option

Any links of decent but minimal differance systems (OEM look and sound, just louder)

Don't go decat unless you want to get involved with Mr Plod, you will not pass an MOT without if the car was designed with cats, sports cats a different story :approve:
Spike Janspeed is excellent value and sounds great without infringements, Quicksilver OMG is very much an acquired taste and not many people can live with it!
Best thing is to listen to the cars at Goodwood and see what floats your boat, it really is all a matter of personal taste!

Agreed, from doing some reading after the above comments i feel the Spike Janspeed is possibly the way to go, and just keen the OEM tucked away safely for putting back on in the future.

Hence me saying it. Definatly sounds different and much nicer at tick over. I only heard it being moved around Scotts garage so not sure what its like on open roads. The tail pipe choice on the Janspeed makes a huge difference i know.

How does tail pipe change sound? Just thinking of it in terms of instruments and changing say the bell on a trombone makes no difference tipi final note. Lengthening the tubing does however.

Well I guess like a singer, open the mouth wider and the note changes. My tailpipes are a lot bigger than normal and the bumper holes are enlarged to suit.

That's usually volume increase though, note changes from a singers diaphragm and moves up to vocal chords. Intriguing. Not saying it doesn't but interested to know how it did it as Shaun said same about his.

The note may not change but it will be like playing an E minor on a violin and then a Ukelele. Both pitched correctly but both emmiting a completly different tone.
Shauns Lunar sounds completly different compared to Bill Patchalls car which was then fitted with the same exhaust. Only real difference being the different type of tail pipe.

I changed the tips of my standard mk5 R32 to some 100mm ones and the sound changed instantly!

Sounded much nicer with the larger tips. I was suprised!
