MK1 lower ball joints

Hinleys

New Member
Hi, I'm new to the forum, my son has a mk1 and we are seeking help in obtaining replacement lower ball joints. I have looked and looked but can't find a source for them. Has anyone got an answer of what my be available ?

I wish it were that simple. They use a heavier casting and the fixing centres are offset I guess to give some degree of caster angle or something of that nature.

Offset ball joints are fitted to phase 2 Vees, phase 1 uses 1*2 ball joints and wishbones at the front, these are readily available, try eBay. If perchance it has been converted to phase 2 front suspension and balljoints then I have manufactured replacement ph2 balljoints.

Well that's good news Simon. I was starting to get in a bit of panic. So are the phase 1 ball joints from the 172 Clio if so they are the units I bought however they have no thread so must use some sort of retaining clip (Circlip). You will have to excuse my lack of mechanical knowledge here as its all new ground to me. Can I send you an image of what was fitted so you can confirm what I have & if you can supply should they be phase 2 type?

thanks.

Are you sure about that? Did my ball joints years back and they certainly were not 1*2 types I distinctly remember removing the ball joint that came with the wishbone to fit a v6 one on. Mk

Send me a photo of what you have and I will try to work out what you have! Is the joint clamped with a bolt or is it threaded with a nut?

Some info on phase 1 front ball joints.
As far as I’m aware, Phase 1 is similar in design to the phase 2 with slightly different castor angle.
Image shows phase 2 on the left phase 1 on the right.

Thank you; PM sent Simon.

Looking for one or a pair of these, but have not been able to find suitable replacements to date, that have such an offset.
