MK1 engine ----> MK2 engine

yeah the ph1 covers fit over the ph2 plenum, its a snug fit with only a few mm clearance, but they fit.

Would be interesting to do and probably wiser long term than attempting modd the ph1 engine. At least you could sell the ph1 bits to reduce the cost!

Would it be better to also install the ph2 loom and ECU? I guess it would be nice to have the standard renault ph2 map on the car so the engine runs smoothly? Custom maps come with their fun, games, flatspots and rough idles!

im sure someone in europe has done the swap as i can remember seeing photos, can find them though, might have some on my home pc.

If I go for it I'd be looking for an engine with loom and ecu. Less hassle in both the short and long run!!

Was your old one just upgraded to ph2 spec then Duncan? Always thought it had a full ph2 engine in there...

yeah, it was a ph1 engine with the everything associated with the inlet changed with new ph2 parts, as far as i know it was identical to the ph2 engine except it didnt have ph2 cams.

It will take a good auto electrician to sort out the swap between ecu's. Remember that the imobiliser ect can be troublesome to sort out. Not impossibe but not easy. You could always get your stock ph1 ecu remaped to suit the slightly different characteristics of the ph2 top end.

So both of them were upgraded Ph1 engines then. Interesting.

Strange an engine transplant isn't a more common mod for the ph1 considering the benfits vs relative ease vs reliability vs cost!!

Now, transplanting a Trophy engine in there. Now we're talking. Although road drivability in race tune would be a nightmare.

In addition to Arnos v6, im sure ive seen a ph1 with a complete ph2 transplant. Had ph2 body panels aswell from memory.

I think the main reason why the engine transplant isnt common is the cost & effort outweigh the very minimal gains. Not trying to put a damper on your plans as it will be a fun project!

One other thing that crossed my mind, dont the exhaust manifold differ on the 2 models? would a ph2 exhaust system be required aswell?

I think the gains would be noticeable considering the lighter kerb weight of the ph1 that can be made even lighter with a few choice deletions.

From what I've read, heard and seen tuning the standard engine (in either iteration) is a thankless task so any potential 'easy' way to additional power is preferable in my mind. We shall see, still a big undertaking/commitment!!

Cheers Tim. Good to get the input of someone's that been there and done it!! :approve:

Completely agree that there are different ways to go about it but I think it's important to keep within my comfort zones both financially and mechanically!! I did considered the n/a and turbo tuning route but considering I have very little mechanical knowledge, and there isn't a one-stop tuning shop for the vee out there, I decided in the past to just leave the engine alone. I never really thought about a complete engine transplant until now. It seems like a relatively easy (compared to turbo, supercharge or extensive n/a tuning) route to take with some moderate performance gains to be had when combined with the diet I'm gonna put the vee on. Also there seems to be more scope to improve the ph2 engine than there does the ph1; Spike's Inlet spacer for instance.

I'm not looking for a street monster - I have other plans afoot to satisfy that itch - just looking to turn the standard car up a couple of notches.

Having said all that nothing has been decided and cost is going to play a very big factor in all of this but so far it's the best way forward to get improved performance (as I see it anyway).

My opinion. I wouldn't bother changing the motor if your after just a few extra bhp/torque to make it feel a tad quicker. Put a bottle of nitrous on the back shelf instead. Failing that, leave it standard, get hold of an off the shelf LS turbo package and wack 800 bhp through the rear wheels of your vauxhall 100% reliably lol.

Its a good excuse to get over there though Spike! Lol My mate recently had his honey moon in LA. He come back with 15,000 dollars worth of drag spec cylinder heads, piston, rods and ecu in suit cases. It would have cost a shit load more over here. An off the shelf package is cheap as chips over there.

I know, Edelbrock heads fit nicely in a suitcase. makes them think at customs though.
