preRS Clio Mk1 Clio 172 wide track conversion?

Can those, if any who know whats needed to do a 172 widetrack conversion on a mk1 clio list whats needed and any issues you have come up against.

little thread bump here and I'm not sure if its doable so asking to see if anyone knows @Sparkysparks

I thinking of wide tracking the twingo, front suspension is basically povo spec clio 2 parts. I'd like to keep my uprights as I already have uprated the brakes and have coilovers. Id like the extra track and stronger antiroll bar. Could i get away with using the 172 arb, wishbones and driveshafts on the stock uprights?
I recall the 172 shafts being the beefier splines on the end, same as the 21 Turbo, whereas the Clio poverty (and probably Twingo) is the smaller spline as found on the R5/9/11 etc etc. Usually signified by the wheel nut sizes, M12 for the smaller and M14 for the larger.

That may be useful or useless info.

172 stuff is a larger spline. That's why I had to cut and shut so I could use the 172 hubs. I couldn't swap the bearing spline over but I never tried the driveshafts themselves. Though by memory they were alot larger.
Funny you should bring this up though as I'm currently trying to get an ARB on mine. Looking to start with the povo stuff first.
I can't see why you can't swap all 172 bits over and have it all. The brakes. The shocks. The rolls. The wideness

your on mk1 stuff arnt you, mines povo spec mk2 which seems to be clio 16v parts. I've done a little googling for the twingo/clio 172. clio 172 had 2 bearing types atleast, one for cup (60mm spacing) and one for the normal sports. the twingo shares the bearing with the normal ones from the parts lookup so hopefully it fits.

i didnt want to swap the whole lot out if i could help it, I'm already running 280mm sport disks with modded pug calipers and coilovers that fit the hubs i have.

I have MK1 wishbones and inner driveshafts cut and shut with 172 driveshaft outers and 172 hubs brakes and coilovers. But I specifically wanted to keep the track the same for the sleeperness.
If I had used 172 wishbones and driveshafts I'd have had no issues.
I think the wheel bearing your refering to is the normal MK2/172 one. I accidentally bought one once

If it’s already covered in another thread, please direct me to it, but I’ll ask the question(s) anyway. I want to wide track my GTT and not sure on a few details:

1. Are the GTT and Clio1 16v/Willy the same as far as the lateral distance between the wishbone mounts? I think I’ve read they are wider? Same question about the 172/182 also.

2. I’m keeping my C1J engine so can’t fit the 2-piece ph2 172 RH Driveshaft. Are Ph1 172 RH Driveshafts still available from anywhere?

3. If I wanted to run Williams shafts with 172 uprights, can I fit GTT or Clio1 16v/Willy hubs into them? What bearings?

4. I have a Williams front Anti-Roll Bar, but I don’t have a steering solution other than extending the GTT tie rod ends, with something like the Pure Motorsport Bump Steer Kit. Any other solutions being used?

Thanks in advance.

R11/9 ties are longer I think, I had to cut one down to fit Camprust, cos one of 5 ones was seized to balljoint and I had a good used 11T one in shit pile, repurposed it.
About an inch longer I think?

Sounds about right @Adey. From memory recall the same and just diff wishbones, arb etc giving extra track and sure Williams subframe had extra plates for additional stiffness.

Rear torsion on clio 16v and williams was the same though

So for arguments sake, I fit a 172 F4R to a GTT subframe (in a GTT) and use the 172 wishbones and uprights together with a strut that works (I know the issues there with thickness and bolt spacing), then the std 172 driveshafts should work perfectly?

While I remember a 172 conversion done in a 5 a long time back no personal experience of the 172 bits on a 5 to say either way. I believe the 172 wishbones are the same as the williams but have variation if cup and 182 versions

In theory you should be able to get it to work but is the 172 subframe wider also?

I’ve added caster in the top mount so can afford a bit in the wishbone to even out the wheel spacing.
I’ve only got the ph2 172 shafts, but if they fit on the lhs, the right should be ok?

Can anyone tell me if a mk1 Clio subframe fits in a 5?

Want to do a wide (wide) track, may end up making wishbones etc driveshafts aren’t an issue.

Will probably end up not using the turret either but not sure yet.

I’m sure more experienced people will chime in but, as far as wishbone mounts and chassis mounts are concerned, I think they’re the same. The Clio use a different radiator mount, so the front x-member is different. So no real benefit unless you’re fitting the F7P engine too?

The hardest piece of the puzzle is driveshafts.

Ok Thanks. I think mine is rotten.

Not having driveshafts in the front will help.😁

Clio slightly different iirc, i think the 16v/williams has a bush on one of the subframe mounts? Been years since ive worked on clio mk1 though. Can get a super5 subframe easy though mate, bit of seam welding and plate the bottom and it will be solid.

Other option is to make a tubular one up, with rose jointed track control arms. Be miles better.
