Million Dollar Barn Find: First Wash in 32 Years!

Incredible collection of rare cars, and a proper barn find, and some, no doubt, but what caught my attention was the fact the Bizzarrini P538 may have been simply polished up and presented to the auction house: Million Dollar Barn Find: First Wash in 32 Years!

Would hate to have purchased it based on the look of its shiny bits alone. Wonder what condition the mechanicals was if the car had been sitting for 30+ years!

That is an amazing collection of cars! I do wonder at the motivation of some folks just buying stuff and putting them away so that not even he can admire them. Maybe he was deprived as a kid?!

I don't think that the mechanical condition of the P538 would have concerned the buyer too much. Finding one at all would be just amazing, and with the condition of the bodywork and all the little bits and pieces as good as that one looks, overhauling the mechanical bits wouldn't be too traumatic.

What an exciting find!

duca d'aosta is a hotel where my kids’ ski racing is based... so I found that video most intriguing. Never heard of the marque before.

Looks like the bastard offspring of a Porsche 550 and a Marcos GT.

Agree with Mark, as that Bizzarini is truly exceptional in every way except perhaps its mechanical condition.

However, I can scarcely believe someone paid £132,250 (with or without commission or VAT) for this 1973 Dino 246GT at Silverstone Auctions in May 2014.

"Barn Find" Dino with low owners & mileage offered without reserve".

"Presented from a deceased estate, Silverstone Auctions are pleased to offer a truly unique chance to acquire a garage find 1973 Ferrari Dino that has been hidden away since 1975. This RHD two-owner car is showing a believed genuine mileage of 13,932."

"As you have probably expected, the idea of finding a low owner, low mileage rare optioned Ferrari Dino with an interesting story of being untouched for the last 39 years is, unfortunately, too good to be true."

I mean look at the state of it! [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

However, a 1973 Dino 246GT that had covered 7,757 from new sold for £432,500 at RM Sothebys in October 2019, even though it has been repainted, so depending on how deep the buyer's pockets are, he/she is likely to not lose out on the barn-find Dino 246GT.

The fact that only 1,800 cars were built may also explain why that particular 246GT sold for that much, especially since it was auctioned without reserve.

Here's another, and GTS this time, that was expected to hit $400,000 when it was up for auction in Feb 2020.

Simon (Sunbeam Lotus), you need to keep hold of yours.....but, some food for thought for all of us Vee owners.

What a collection !
Not sure on the 246GT prices though, I paid £7,500 for mine (that was in 1983 though)! [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

Mine cost my late Uncle £3,050 in 1976 - his retirement present to himself. About the same price as an RS2000 or a 3 litre Capri! Currently not on SORN (free tax) in case I feel the need to make a necessary journey in an unnecessary car!

Simon & Ed, enjoy the ride...

Indeed, the prices of Dinos have baffled me for quite a while. Do like its proportions and curvaceous shape.

A friend who lives in London used to look after and exercise a neighbour's 246 for him when the old boy was no longer able to drive.

When the owner passed away, his wife came round with the keys and said to my friend 'he wanted you to have it' .........yellow too which i prefer to retail red.

My first company car was a Mk2 MR2 which i always felt had something of the 246 about it.....

Here is a cool video about the Dino from an acknowledged expert in the marque, and all things Ferrari: Why The Dino Is So Special - /DRIVEN

I get it now, especially the back story behind its creation, and its shape is undeniably good, beautiful even, much like the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale (and the Tipo 33/2 race car), which are two of my favourites.

I joined the Ferrari Owners Club back in 1983 ish. They wouldn't give me the time of day and turned their noses up as a Dino wasn't a 'proper' Ferrari ! Apparently at the time a Ferrari HAD to have 12 cylinders !

Yeah, I had heard about that, and even recall Jeremy C also once making the ''not a proper "Ferrari" comment on Top Gear.
