Megane coupe handbrake cable

Its been iffy for a while now, but i think its not pulling the calliper back fully, it starts doing a wired howling noise which goes when you brake.

Passenger side disk is mega hot as well, other side is normal. before they adjusted it on my MOT, the drivers side rear disk never got warm.

Can i assume that the cable needs replacing? the handbrake lever goes up all the way then clunks!

how much we talking for brake cables approximately? surly it cant be too much work for a garage to do?

Any help is good :)

i would think it was the caliper sticking, but of course it could be the cable as well.. get someone to look where the cable is attached to the caliper and see if it (end of cable) moves when you move the lever..

Yep, the little lever that the cable is attached to isnt moving. how do these get free'd up?

best would be to take off the calipers and refurb them.. when the rears get to a certain age, they start causing problems.. otherwise work the lever with a pair of pliers until it's loose... did the car stand for a long time with the hand brake on?

might be beneficial to pull back the boot around the handbrake mechanism on the back of the caliper... probably dry.

Add a load of grease and work the lever to free it up.

cables are cheap and easy job, change both of them.

As for the handbrake, I would just work the lever with the cable off, if its not getting better then pull the pads out check the piston isn't a corroded mess then work it in and out (to do so press the brake pedal then wind it back in), then grease it by pulling the gaiter back.

thanks for the help guys

turns out that one pad on the calliper was to the metal, as making a right noise.

i changed the pads, but someone at some point must have flecked with the pad holder bolts cos 1 is cross threaded.

i out it back together as well as i could, still makes a whining noise though. I'm wondering if its cos the pad holder isn't sitting right and still rubbing the pad on the disk or a bearing

either way i need a new calliper, its being done tomorrow.

Update:

the front nearside bearing has popped, whines a bit. not the end of the world.

rear calliper is sorted now, handbrake is fine :)
