ME STARTERS GONE!

Spike

New Member
Joy of joys, yes the starter has packed up, oh goody.
Now to save me trawling through zillions of posts, which one do I order that will fit and do the job?
Oh, and for anyone that wants a laugh, it happened on the busiest road in the area with the car straddling two lanes of now stationary traffic, boy was I popular. certainly it seems everyone in Nottingham now knows what a clio v6 is, and nobody wants one.
any help please.

Big thanks but is it not the same as anything else? has no one cross referenced this?
And yes, I have calmed down now.

Actually, given the 3 hours fitting time...
new could be the best option.

£170 is probably the generic price too.

All now fixed, starter came out at 175 inc from reno, delivered to the garage.
As for fitting, i got one ofmy freinds to tie up his mot ramp for a day and a half, and got him to get his hands dirty instead of mine. total labour was £200 but i gave him £220 anyway, i was pleased with what he had done.
As for the starter, the one supplied by reno was 50% longer than the one that came off, so i dont know if that is a mod or what? car starts unbelievibly well, turns over sooo quickly it sounds like a different car, i think this has been on its way out for a while.
So £400 lighter i am very pleased, car fixed with clean hands. mechanic has said that now he has done one he would be prepared to do another, at the same price. his name: Steve Lacey, connoisseur cars, colwick road, nottingham. ph 0115 9871061 or of course pm me with your details and i will pass them on.
The only snag apparently was removing the rear cat as the studs sheared, but he replaced them. good man.

I replaced mine last year with one from Reno.
It was quite a bit larger than the original but the magnets are screwed to the case and not just bonded.
The rear cat doesn't need to come off, the bigger starter will still fit past the exhaust took me a couple of hours.

Hi Ed, thanks for your comment but i was there, looking at the job on the ramp and i would honestly say there was NO WAY the starter was coming off without removing the rear cat, i have over 30 years experience as a mechanic and short of a magic wand there as not a chance! this led to a real headache as the bolts to the manifold were solid and just rounded off, this meant the whole of the engine covers, both inner and outer (all four) had to come off to get a socket hammered onto the rearmost nut! trust me, if it could have been done it would. i have seen some cats where the bracket is loose on the pipe but this one was welded in place so the starter would not slide past it.
anyway, all done now, so whats next on the list?

Not according to this:- (just cat heat shields needed to come off)

Ps glad you got it sorted. Interesting on the new starter design too. :approve:

I don't know why his starter removal guide isn't in the knowledge section, anyone else think it should be ?

Hello Martin
As far as i remember I know it came from reno and it was the upgraded type as stated in the above post, and as i say trying to remember the starter was slightly longer on the body but not remembering a screwed magnetic cage. Older starters used screws to secure magnet posts to the inside of the housing which are then wound with wire to become magnetic poles, these were much bigger in diameter than the new style of starter and were much heavier. I actually had the pleasure of replacing one of these today on a Dynojet dyno and was physically much bigger and heavier.
One person in the know about glued magnets is Simon of rustedandrotten fame, i am sure he could answer the question of the differences between the starters and the type of glue used. Dont forget that adhesive is stronger than weld these days.
