Mars Red Ph1 Number 416 Moves Home

New Member
My search for a Ph1 car is over, and I'm the very happy new owner of 416, a Mars Red car.

A deal was done before Christmas to sell the car to somebody else, but last Friday the deal fell through, and the owner, Ivan, contacted me to see if I was interested. I was up in Utoxeter at 9.30 on Sunday morning, and it took about 30 seconds to see that this was quite a special car.

It's still in it's original paint, with a few stone chips on the front. The rest of the body is unmarked. It is completely standard apart from the silver side pods, so makes a really interesting contrast to my Ph2 car with Tredline seats and harnesses, induction kit, very noisy exhaust and modified brakes.

It has all MOT's from the first one showing that the current 25k mileage is right, and has service history showing it was serviced every 5k miles or so. It has only recently had the cambelt service at BTM Performance Ltd at 23k miles / 12 years, and apparently the original belt looked perfect when it came off! It had a new clutch and waterpump at the same time.

All the manuals are present in the correct opaque wallet with riveted 'Clio Renaultsport V6' plaque, and all contained in a chequer-plate aluminium box, which again is apparently correct for the Ph1.

I drove the car back from Uttoxeter to Gloucester yesterday afternoon, and it feels very taught and like new, with no rattles or creaks. Both the clutch and accelerator feel quite different to my Ph2 car, with the Ph2 controls being much more progressive, and the Ph1 ones being more binary and more eager to get on with it! It didn't take long to get used to the difference, and finding the right position for the seat to suit my 6ft 5inch frame helped.

It has new Pilots all round which do contribute to the smooth ride. When Ivor got the car at the beginning of last year it still had the original, or very early, set of tyres, which has flatted due to storage and gave some strange handling characteristics.

The gear linkage was modified by Fred at BTM last year, taking the slop out of it, and is now very similar to the Ph2 linkage.

The standard seat was uncomfortable before tweaking it to fit, and now it's fine. I would be amazed it it were as good as the Tredlines after a few hours as those are about the most supportive seats I've ever sat in.

The biggest difference is the sound of the car. It is so quiet with the standard airbox and exhaust when pottering around, and even getting on a bit, but the V6 growl does kick in at 3500 rpm or so, and just gets better as the redline approaches. I think it will stay standard as a contrast to the hooligan setup on my Ph2!

This is another keeper for me, and I really would say to anybody buying a Vee to snap up a Ph1 now whilst there is a price differential.. It really doesn't make any sense at all that the Ph1 cars are 30% to 50% cheaper than the Ph2 cars, and it surely is a situation that won't last. And the Ph1 cars have that great bug-eyed face!

Oh Wow! I'd never have guessed it was 416. ;) One of the most cared for Vees. So well cared for that I borrow pics of it to show to newbies when they're asking questions.

Nice one Mark

Tried to buy this off Ivan when the first deal fell through as I was promised 2nd chance at it but got an email from him yesterday to say it had been sold to someone else. :(

Shes a beaut Mark. Congratulations again!
Great to read your thoughts on the differences between the two cars. Be interested to hear your thoughts after a few months of ownership of both. :approve:

Congratulations Mark. :approve:

Well done - seems like, yet again, the timing was perfect...........

Enjoy!

Congratulations Mark! (Again)
Now that you own two very nice examples, how are you going to choose which one to drive?

For La Vie en Blue, both will go...it's only up the road and Carol, my missus, rather likes the look of the Ph1.

For Origine RS, the loud one.

For days after the night before, the quiet one.

Normal days, it depends which one was used last.

It's a nice choice to have!

One of the reasons for buying both types was really to understand the differences, as in the components used, the build quality and the driving. I have a hunch that I'll start to document / photograph those differences because I enjoy doing that sort of stuff...hence the Lotus Cortina website. But I also wanted another car to share the load with the Ph2 as I couldn't keep out of it last year, and the miles were starting to pile on...until the exhaust packed up!

But that was a benefit as well as I met up with Scott at SG and he showed me the car underneath, and what to look out for and protect. So I have the Mars car on it's front ramps ready to jack up the rear so that I can get the wheels off, clean it all off and apply some anti-rusting oil on all the exposed bits. That way at least I won't get paranoid about running in the wet. The only trouble is that I can't figure out how to get the bloomin locking wheel nuts off. There must be a tool to remove the nut shrouds before the nut key can get them off. Once off, the standard wheel nuts are going back on!

I will persevere tomorrow.

Thanks for all your comments guys. I didn't really appreciate the reputation this car has or indeed how good it is, and I do realise just how lucky I am to have bought this one. I've put two 'wanted' adverts on the forum in the past few months and struck gold both times.

I was told that the car was pampered when it lived in the North-East, but as Ivor had used it in all weathers, going to work etc., and it wasn't garaged, I thought that it may have deteriorated a little...or a lot!

But Ivor did look after it well and sprayed it with Scottoil underneath and it's been very well preserved. It hadn't seen salt (until I drove it home on Sunday) and I guess that's also contributed to it's preservation. I gave the car a good wash on top and underneath when I got home, and left it outside to dry.

It's now in my hooligan garage, the place where the fun cars and bikes live, and the workshop. It's a bit crowded in there in winter as it's super-dry and the main bikes over-winter in there as well.

Getting the car in the air and getting the wheels off (at the rear so far) shows it to be in great condition, with the painted bits still retaining most, and in some cases, all their paint. The ally bits have no oxidisation, and the calipers, whilst just starting to show a little rust at the bottom edges, look fine. The subframes are a little discoloured, but still look fresh.

I washed it all back with WD40 and wiped it all clean, then sprayed it with Ferrosol, which Scott recommends for penetration and rust prevention. I must tell him about Scottoil, and after all, he is named after a motorcycle!

The sills are mint underneath, and there are no signs of poor jacking. Even the undertrays look to be very good, with just the two 'ears' at the front of the rear section hanging a bit low and catching humps etc.

So far it's looking very good, and I've promised it that I won't take it out on wet salty roads again!
