Mars Ph1 Comes Home...It's a different car!

The Mars Phase 1 came home today after a long time away, and having had Scott go through the car from front to back, including the cam-belt change.

He really does do a great job, with only new Renault parts being used rather than pattern replacements. The pattern water pump was just starting to leak, and at 5 years old that's not good!

The starter motor was getting very slow, and now it starts instantly without hearing the starter.

He goes the extra mile as well, and seeing this car as one of the best original survivors, takes care to make sure it stays that way. The rear quarters , where the can rust quite badly, were treated to a dose of waxoil to make sure rust never starts there. Little things like the rear bumper fasteners were replaced as they were a bit tarnished, along with the numberplate light that had yellowed a little, and the rear silencer was polished up for the first time in 18 years!

All these bits and pieces just lift the car, and also demonstrate to me the passion he has for the Vee.

I decided to get the silver pods put back to their original body colour, and I must confess they do look better. One little mod I had Scott put on is an ITG Megaflow intake box to get the proper amount of induction roar! Kept the original setup of course, but just fancied a bit of the right noise.

Can't wait to take it out for a long run, and it will be used a lot more from now on. In the meantime I'll be getting the polishing going...something I've never done with this car!!

It will take me a while to get used to the sidepods not being in silver Duncan! As soon as the DVLA opens back up I'll get the original numberplate re-instated as well.

Looking forward to being able to use my normal test track when Wales opens up again. The roads up to Brecon / Builth Wells and over to Aberystwyth are perfect Vee country...can't wait!

I think we’ll all be offloading our V6 plates at a premium as soon as a 21st Century V6 Dino is launched...

Let me know when you do we could meet up for a spin. Mid/west wales is my play ground too.

Not sure what the rules are for driving around Wales now...looks like having to stick to '5 miles'. Got some strange looks from a couple of Police chappies in Monmouth as I was passing through going East, and they followed me back into The Forest of Dean when they stopped and turned around. Felt like Rambo being thrown out of town!

I got pulled the other day cos "the back of my car was very low" (Volvo S60)

I looked behind me at the three kids in the back (14/12/9) like... "well...yeah..."

Then he left.

Bizarre.

Chris was way ahead of me then 'cos I didn't even know they existed until the test between the two. The Clio came out on top by the way!

Credit to the owner, Mark!

Lots of Carbon niceties in the Beetle, I vaguely remember. Crazy body kit & price tag to boot. I think it’s underpinnings were a little unspectacular.

Both had their own race car series. Probably should’ve mixed it up!

Credit to Scott more like! He took the car up there, and did it a lot of good in the process. After a year or so doing very little, a tank full of new petrol and a good 'Italian Tune-up' got the car running properly again, and the sessions on the track sharpened up the brakes back to how they should be. The tester loved the character of the Vee and the ride, especially compared with the spine-crushing German suspension!

Nice feature in this months Classic & sports car.

Didn’t you have a soft-spot got the RSi (or did I make that up)?
Would absolutely love one. Nearly pulled the trigger on one before I got back into Vee ownership.

Couldn’t justify the 18.5k price tag at the time.

Looks like abit of a bargain now as the only 3 currently for sale are between 44k & 46k

Just seen a Tweet from the road tester: Tweet

"One was well built and quite dull to drive, the other knocked together and a riot. I won’t spoil the surprise!"

I haven't read the article but guess there is no surprise which car he is referring to...and that above says it all I guess.

Must admit that the Beetle RSi never appealed to me.

I love to think I'd still have that car if all went to plan, absolutely mint. It would defo have a lot more miles on it though.
