major flat spot .....

before you read please be aware i am clueless of how remaps and ecu's work.

As some of you are aware I have recentley bought a clio ph1 v6, it has a few mods such as full decatted exhuast system, ph2 v6 fuel rail-plenum-throttlebody, pipercross viper and has been rolling road at 253bhp.
Now the problem is it runs a Destek ecu?!? and is pretty lame / rough below 4k with a real bad flatspot between 2.5-3.5k. I asked the previous buyer about this and he said that its a piggy back ecu and doesnt switch over till 4k before that its the standard ecu running things?? i didn't know this is how piggy back ecu's work. I have a reciept for the ecu for over 900 quid and have heard of dastek before so i am pressuming its a decent one.
Question's are will a live map fix this? (i'm told u can live map the car at anytime) do you know anyone who would map it (preferably up north) and also im going to FCS do you know if theres any stands/people who are going that might have a look/map it there for me?

Once the car is fully warmed up it runs fine, but need that flat spot sorted and if your too heavy on the pedal in low revs it coughs and splutters a little as if its overfueling?? Also has a strong smell of fuel from exhuasts suggesting this?!?

Now i have posted this on cliosport too and someone mentioned that it could just be the lambda sensor causing the flat spot .... has anyone else had this problem and is it an easy cure? I know on previous cars lambda sensors have been a common failure yet i have not had one go on any of my cars.

thanks
j

you need to talk to me or tim on this we have the knwledge first hand clio sport don t know owt and proberbly most on hear in respect to this problem

Do you mean talk to you at FCS?? dont know who tim are or anyone tecnical on here tbh
anyhelp will be appreciated

Hi jamie,

Locally you could try speaking to earnie larton at lad motorsport in morecambe.
They are good guys down there and would prob take a look.

Co-op renault in preston would also put it on their diognostic machine for about 60 to read any fault codes.

That's all I can offer in terms of advice but more than you've got so far on this thread!
Hope you get it sorted.

All an ECU does, in simple terms, is adjust the point at which the spark fires relative to the crank position and the fuel injection point and duration. A piggy back ECU such as the Dastek takes input from the stock engine sensors, and possibly some additional ones, and intercepts and overrides the OEM ECU ignition and fuel injection signals based on the 'mapping' done when the ECU is installed. This essentially fills in the gaps and weaknesses of the OEM ECU so-to-speak.

As with a piggy back and full replacement ECU, the time available, budget, skill and experience of the 'mapper' will primarily determine whether the car runs right or not. You can end up with an expensive box of useless electronics if the tuning/mapping is not done correctly - there is no magic bullet just because an ECU is expensive and has a good reputation or not. It is all in the 'mapping', assuming the tuning parts are suitable and the engine is running optimally. The installation of the Mk2 parts will have meant the Mk1 OEM ECU would be unable to fuel the engine correctly as, IIRC, you will also have Mk2 injectors.

You would be wise to seek the advice of people like Ray, Tim or any 'reputable' tuners who have experience with Dastek and use people that have credible reputations. There are other owners that have Mk2 parts fitted to the Mk1 and may be able to offer advice on their solutions. From what you say you have been told a bit of BS, probably as an excuse for the car not running right.

Give Owen Developments a call. They mapped it for Duncan. (ddouble) I'm sure they would be pleased to help you.

PS.

I had all the lambda sensors replaced on my Vee. They failed and caused the engine to run very badly like suddenly kangarooing at certain revs then taking off rather swiftly. They were in a sorry state when SG Motorsport took my Vee in to sort it out. it's been running perfectly for the past 2 years now hasn't skipped a beat.

Jinxed it now I guess lol

Hi Jamie

The Vee has a "slight" flat spot in standard guise anyway. I was always stalling mine before I learned to compensate for it.
Members such as Tim and Ray have had direct experience with performance tuning, and will be able to offer you sound advice.
Tuning companies default to taking your hard-earned to "experiment" for solutions. Can get costly...

I'd give Ray a call (if you haven't already). :approve:

i am near leeds and its up to you if you want to talk no skin of my nose i have spent plenty on crap work takes some time to understand the car

Jamie...Ray would be able to offer you alot of real world advice...he's been there and bought the tshirt so to speak.

Pm him pal :approve:

I agree, give ray a call before you get robbed, he is one of the good guys and there are plenty of cowboys out there. i think taking it to renault will be a waste of time and money as they will not understand the piggyback ecu. if you are around nottingham at all i can scan the car for you and read the faults, but, if you try and read live data the data may be fogged by the piggback altering the original readings, you need someone who understands this. i am happy to scan this for free but you have to get to me. ring ray first though. spike 07889 153352.

Not really, i have changed the fuel i use to shell vpower and has helped so runs smoother below 4k on original map even with the mods but still has flatspot. I spoke to RS tuning and i will probably get it down to them later in the year when i have some spare cash. only done 20mile in last 4 week so since i changed the fuel only done probably a few hundered miles ( mainly on run back from FCS) I still believe it takes longer than it should to warm up :s

Is that actually warming up or going by what you see on the temperature gauge?

There have been quite a few owners with thermostats being faulty and even some temperature sensors. Mine was put on some sort of meter which showed the engine was doing the right thing, but the reading on the gauge was saying cold after almost an hour of running.

The reading on the gauge does get to temperature in reasonable time tho not as quick as nearly all the other cars i've had. But its a little while after that when it seems to run better...
If i remember on the weekend i will time it when i start it til when the gauge is at its optimal position (hasnt been started for 2 weeks)

well took the car for a good run to kirkbride to a straightliners event and the car was running spot on now i have been using vpower for a few tanks.... still a flatspot but doesnt seem as bad?!?!?

got 14.3 1/4 mile so not too shabby best the aston vantage could get in same conditions was 13.9 so quite happy!

Hey Jamie, if your not happy with the mapping I've got a mate of a mate that will have a look at it. He's a good lad that knows his stuff and will take the existing mapping and have look to see if he can find any problems. I think he might like a challenge like this ;) ( he's too cleaver for his own good LOL).
From what I've heard he'll take your origional mapping keeping a copy ( if needed ) and re-map for your own personal choice weather it be mid / top end, rev band, fuel pressure etc. Must admit I'm not clued up on this but drop us a PM and I'll put you in touch. Think he's got quite a few people working for him now that come round to you and download your existing map and email it to him to sort and they then upload the new settings via email and re-install.
Phil
