Kangoo 172 cup

Got to be an improvement! Has the van ever been mapped?

Am I allowed to say I prefer the kangoo van to the "other" van?

Assuming stock map as the rev limit is still 7200 or there abouts. This and the Extra are both good in their own right its hard to say which is better out of the pair of them. One thing i have noticed with the extra is it feels very small now with the short doors as i have put a fair bit of bulk on since last using it lol

Has it really helped that much? Ive just ordered some more original sized pipework to keep it thin and discreet, its quick enough as it is.

Whats stock bore 2" ? I think the major issue with mine was the crappy backbox. From what i read the stock cat is 200cell and flows quite well for what it is which makes me half tempted to bosh one back in to save hassle in the future

No I'm on stock 1.2 bore, so looks to be 1.5", but im also on the 1.2 backbox so i get pure intake noise. Would be interesting to see what its making on the dyno. Are you going to the dyno day on the 31st march?

You definitely want larger than 1.5" bore mate that will be strangling it and bin the backbox for a decent flowing one. I would just bang a half decent 16v aftermarket exhaust on i imagine they will be 2"+ bore.

Wont be at the rr day sadly as miles away. Im interested to see what power it pulls it feels half decent now

I have an empty cat letting it all expand for now, but a 2.5" system is an option for me for the summer.
Whats the next renault to add to the collection?

Part 32 - New shit

Done a few jobs as was planning on taking it to Croft beginning of this month which didnt happen as the weather was shocking.

Had an intermittent misfire/cough low down. Leads and coil pack have been changed for good used items so bit the bullet and changed the plugs. New oem @ £40 a set (£££) 20180225_152511.webp20180225_152827.webp20180225_152824.webp20180225_154201.webp
Changed oil and filter (oem elf 5/40 again) airfilter well used20180310_135401.webp

New pedal in stock. Still think it might be pre cat lambda on its way or injector will see if it cures it at weekend. Check out the vin code on uch lol 20180313_175936.webp
Snow goes then back again last weekend. Sat waiting patiently on the yoko parada spec 2s on the track wheels after Croft washout

As i had a bit of cash saved up for Croft burning a hole in my pocket i made a fairly big purchase

Part 33 - The new look

Been looking a wheel options for a while to replace the 16" Turinis. After destroying all the tyres at Croft last year decided 16" rubber is A -Too expensive for quality tyres B - does not fit great on the kangoo now it is quite low & the final nail in the coffin was realising it goes/drives a lot better on the 15" wheels.

So sniffing about for wheels and had a few choices in mind which would suit. They needed to be a good strong rim 15x7 et 35-40 and preference was motorsport/trackday look. Seen a few options that took my fancy

Compomotive mo5/6 - Expensive and rare now £500 a set then possibly tyres and refurb on top
Oz superleggera/ultraleggera - Superleggera rocking horse shit now and expensive 2nd hand - Ultraleggera best part of £800 for rims alone
Receline Rl7 - Rare as rocking horse shit
Speedline 2118 - Seem to come up for sale quite often around £4-600 various condition - easily available new
Speedline Turini 15" - As found on the twingo/optional extra for some clio's - fairly cheap £200ish a set needing tyres and refurb - Only 6j and high offset so would need massive spacer on the rear.

So looked round for 2nd hand rims. As usual anything that was half decent seemed to be minimum £300 needing tyres & poss refurb. After factoring in a blast/powdercoat @ £180 ish depending on initial price could be looking at £500 new so had a sniff round for new rims. Speedline 2118 had caught my eye and had been keeping an eye out for 2nd hand which seemed to be expensive - Seen a set one rim cracked and knackered R888R for £450 and not looking a1 condition.

Looking at options available in 15x7 - anthracite was my first choice but Et43 only which was no good as would mean a 12-15mm spacer at the rear - trying to get away from big spacers. White and gold in et38 same as the clio2 cup racers had - would work OK with the current 8mm spacer on rear. Gold was a no go - not for me - White was ok as best option.

Shopped around - a set of 4 rims new was £640 delivered from a few places. I found a motorsport company on ebay offering them for £560 - lots of et's available and colours listed so messaged them with what i wanted - no reply. Rang them and they said they would return the call - still waiting this call back !? After a few days i was fairly impatient and thought fuck them ill take my money elsewhere. On the offchance i thought i would ring speedline uk and asked if they sold direct to the public - answer was yes even got a good discount and the rims were in stock £540 delivered to the house.

2 Days later a large package arrives20180319_170806.webp20180319_170828.webp
Opened to reveal 4x sexy new rims

On the above pic no centre caps are present because no recess for them on motorsport rim. I wanted something to cover the rusty hub nuts - Quick google reveals tons of threads on centres for these wheels (google is king what did we do before google lol. google search revealed a part number for Renault centre caps - the pics of them looked so so 'acceptable' so ordered 4 which weren't that cheap at a tenner each. 2 days later and a knock at he door and a package from Renault Parts Direct ( cheaper and easier to order from than local renault highly recommended)

20180321_215814.webp

As above looked fairly acceptable and clip into the hub centres "close enough". So the wheels sit in the kitchen for a few days awaiting fitment of part worn Hankook Rs2 semi slicks that a good friend kindly donated. I planned on getting the tyres fitted on payday as my bank balance had taken a fair beating on buying the wheels so was waiting it out patiently when i received a phonecall Thursday 22nd 5:20pm (to be fecking precise lol) off another good friend who told me that one of the local garages had just reopened as Tyre city and 2 day 50% off deal on any tyre on the premises. "Get down there quick Briggs like right now if poss before they sell out, close at 6pm" the garage is 15mins away so jumped in the clio and shot down making it there 5:50pm. Initially i only wanted a set of 4x 18" Michelin pilotsport 4 for @Sheryl_O megane so got them for £266 which was an absolute bargain - turned out i knew the manager in the garage so made an enquiry on the price of Yokohama Ad08r 195/50/15v - in stock @ £147 a set of 4 with the discount - silly cheap cheaper than new budget brand tyres so just bought them - new tyres new rims perfect timing.

20180322_182336.webp

Rammed the clio full of 18" tyres so had to leave the yokos and pick up on the Friday. The mad thing is the Kangoo was the perfect vehicle for collection but was buried on the drive behind cars. Clio loaded up

20180322_175923.webp

Friday comes and i shoot down to pick up the tyres. I swear there was people queing to get in Tyre City with the 50% opening offer on. Even though the fitting was included i took the wheels to my mate who is a shit hot tyre fitter and does all my wheels, i did not want to risk any marks on the new wheels.

Rims loaded up and new tyres

Give the rims 2 coats of Poorboys wheel sealant inside and out. Then on to fitting - straight off the jack - bolted on no issues after careful working out of ideal et

Overall very pleased with them, took a bit of a gamble with white but turned out ok. The Ad08r seem to stick like shit to a blanket turn in feels positive. That's all until next time Ladies and Gents, thanks for reading !

Part 34 - Spring Clean

After a long winter and a fresh set of white wheels it highlighted the paint needed a bit of tlc on the Kangoo. First good day on a weekend so decided to crack on.

The paint had gone very oxidised on the roof/sides as it had not been very well cared for in the past. The paint was also very soft and had been agressively polished with a heavy cut and poss rotary before as i noticed that its almost struck through to primer on some edges so had to proceed with real caution as a heavy cut which was really needed was not possible. I really needed a paint thickness gauge but did not have one available so just done the tested method of using the least agressive cut to get the job done.

First stage was wash and clay. Followed by mask up..the clay was absolutely black off the roof.

Masked up and i cracked on. Im still a novice with the da having only used rotary and g3 many years ago so had to proceed with caution. I started on the roof incase of a fuck up and could hide it easy. 2×2 foot area marked out and tarted by using a finishing pad on the da with no cut and poorboys white diamond glaze. One pass with the da and whiter but no shine. Tried a chemical guys finishing polish on the finishing pad and not much better. Next step was a chemical guys light cutting compound and blue light polishing pad. Come up nice and white so give it 2 passes to work the compound in whilst checking the pad for paint transfer. Looked minimal so went for it.

Pic of the roof half way through. Its a little hard to see but the difference is night and day, lower part of pic after first cut.

20180408_125900.webp
Front and sides done, should have masked up better really but time permitting was adequate.

20180408_143058.webp
After this i give it a once over with Poorboys white diamond glaze and finishing pad to try and fill any imperfections and improve finish20180408_162949.webp

Bird shit on it before applying wax - the joys of living near the seaside lol20180408_164955.webp
This in total took 5-6 hours - there is a lot of panelwork on a van even though it is a small one ! I should have stripped mirrors and trims off really but it would have rolled into 2 days work easy.

After this i applied 2 coats of Collinite 476s wax to seal the cleaned and glazed paint, by hand this time as shoulder was killing me off the da. No trim gel as waiting for some Gtechniq c4 to arrive.

20180408_182919.webp20180408_182815.webp20180408_182828.webp
Happy with the finish however i feel i could have improved it a lot better if it had more paint on it. I guess its had stickers removed in the past and quick flog over with a rotary. Would have been nice to wet sand it and really bring it up but this is what i have so worked with it. Thanks for reading !

Part 35 - Rear suspension

The rear shocks have been on the list for replacement for a while, due to them being original and circa 180k and quite soft. When i rebuilt the rear beam i noticed how similar they looked to to gtt/clio1 16v rear shocks. Bought a new pair of clio1 16v gaz rear adjustable rebound/bump off ebay for £120 new direct from gaz so not badly priced - took a gamble as did not know if they would go straight on.

New vs old - shorter when fully extended so ideal for lowered
20180421_153821.webp
Fully compressed - only possible on softest setting
20180421_153841.webp
minor mod required to top bush - the gaz were 44mm where oem are 40mm so popped insert out and trimmed/trimmed polybush to suit so bolt has clearance off tyre20180426_193417.webp
Fitted - bolt straight on - had to trim lower washers so adjusters would fit - arches degreased and power washed - come up ok
20180421_153508.webp

20180421_153526.webp
20180421_163956.webp
Less droop on beam when jacked up with shocks fitted20180428_163342.webp

Trimmed rear arch liners and raised torsion bar 10mm - hardly noticeable but gives so much more clearance. I tested clearance by dropping the shocks to softest setting and loading the rear up which put it on the bumpstops and still enough clearance all round - its tight with 7j wheels and the larger sidewalls of the AD08r but acceptable. These mods combined with the shocks set at half way - 8 clicks from soft has made a massive difference - i had the occasional chirp off the rear tyres on large compressions/large bumps with oem rear shocks and that has now gone. The stiffer rear has improved turn in too and the ride is firm yet acceptable for road use with the option to back it off a little if needs be.
20180428_174627.webp20180428_200626.webp20180428_204724.webp

In other news i have swapped downstream/post cat lambda around to see if it cures the slight hesitation it has. Its better but still not 100% and no faults present and live data checks out ok so can only assume injector on its way out. Will ride it out for now its drivable.
