Part 28 - Santa has been

Got a couple of xmas pressies for the Kangoo this year

Dashcam & rear cam. I have wanted one of these for a while as they record front and back and the rear acts as a reverse camera. Primary use is for trackday footage as im not a dashcam wanker but still useful if some numpty pulls out on you. Its hard wired and records as soon as the ign is on so no messing about turning the camera on before track. Used an old coathanger to feed the wiring under they ply lined rear which was a royal fuck about but done now

The rear camera has a +12v tagged onto the rear reverse light wiring to turn the leds on and trigger the front display to go full screen. 20171228_151132.webp

The vision is surprisingly good at night and its nice to have some rear vision. Saves crashing into stuff/running people over as i usually just whack it in reverse and dont give a fuck like a true white van driver:D

On other news mot runs out 8th Jan. The current mot was obviously bent as a 9 bob note, most of the stuff that needed doing was done throughout the year so after a quick checkup a small list of jobs to do

Jobs done

Exhaust was starting to blow its tits off at the front joint - Fixed just needed the spring fasteners nipping up - loose as per everything else on this. Runs/sounds loads better now nipped up

Handbrake travel was excessive - just required cable nipping up at the front as never got round to it after refurbishing the beam

To do

Inner tie rods need replacing due to play - parts in stock - get geo done again after fitting

Inner cv boot drivers side shaft - split after last 2x trackdays rubber has gone brittle and perished. New boot in stock

The ps3s look a little worse for wear on the turini's however still legal. Might bosh the track wheels on for mot as looking for part worns for the turinis.

Half days work and we should be good to go:D

Part 29 - should know better

Made a start on the couple of jobs required for mot today. Moved the megane out of the garage so i could work in the dry as weather conditions not great. Pulled o/s driveshaft out to do the inner cv boot - shaft out in 15 mins and compare the cv boot. Looks ok so continue and stripped down the shaft in 5 mins. Fit cv boot on and refit tripod bearing to find out the boot is not the same as original as it is round and the original fits around the inner cv cup. Typical Renault no idea why they would design the boot like this - also typical shite euro car parts non fitting parts. I reckon 50% of the parts i have bought from there are either shite or do not fit

Pics of said driveshaft

Ordered what looks to be the correct cv boot from J&R so had to leave it on axle stands until it arrives. Also tried to remove the knackered inner tie rod and could not get the spanner/stihlsons in so give up for today. Proper tie rod tool ordered for the job as it will be needed for the megane soon.20180107_154316.webp
Megane looking sad outside the garage however its in the bodyshop next wed so should be one colour again soon. Kangoo should be mot ready by back end of week fingers crossed.20180107_151903.webp

Performance wise the megane is leagues ahead especially handling wise.

Performance wise
1. Megane
2. Extra
3. Kangoo
4. Gtt - however the gtt is just a cruiser these days:D
I still dont think there is a lot ( if anything ? ! ) faster for the cash on track than a meg. My R26 was ballistic on track.

Part 30 - Mot Time

Cv boot turned up from J&R so offered it up and still not bang on the same as oem Renault typically. I managed to get it on but it had very small gaps around where the boot is moulded around the inner cv so thought fuck it and ran a line of tiger seal around the boot and give it a couple of days to set before i refitted it. Will monitor the situation to see if any cv grease creeps out over next few weeks. A bit of digging on the diaologys last week and found what looks to be the oem boot so may need to order in the future20180113_170350.webp

Inner tie rod tool turned up and removed the tie rod with ease. Well worth £22, will do the megane with it next then probably be stuck in the cupboard forever lol20180113_145702.webp20180113_135603.webp20180113_135612.webp
After easy removal with the tool i compared the old tie rod to the new one. I done a lot of research on the inner tie rods before replacing as there is a lot of variations on the clio models over the years. As this is fitted with 172cup track control arms i assumed it had cup tie rods to suit so took a gamble and sourced the correct length cup tie rods to suit.

After reading a lot of info on the net saying they were Renault only and £40ish a side i found out that Firstline FTR5277 were the correct length and supposed to fit the 172 cup. They were £10-20 each on ebay so took a gamble and ordered a pair. One initially turned up as a generic fucking wrong part so had to return it but got there in the end.

Old vs new. The play in both the original inner tie rods was shocking when removed - no play at all with the new parts.20180113_135828.webp
Fitted the track wheels whilst the jack was out as noticed a nail in the michelins. Washed and cleaned and trims treated to bumper gel. Does not look the worst on the 15s to be fair

As the track rod ends needed to be removed to change inner tie rods the toe needed setting again. I measured the distance the nut was before removing and refitted it in the same position to make it somewhere near and then took it to my local garage to get it on the Hunter alignment for a set up. 20180115_173118.webp
Track spec geometry - could do with a little bit more negative camber on N/S but its no race car so close enough i guess. 10min toe out overall for better turn in . Drives great with new tie rods, no knocking or vague steering as i had noticed it wondered a bit after riding the kerbs on the last couple of trackdays.20180115_173827.webpThey had a mot slot free so just stuck it in for mot whilst it was there - not the normal garage i use for mot's however the lads are great so just stuck it on mot lift and it flew through with no advisories so happy with that. Testers comments were very clean for an old van. Have used it daily for last few days and no dramas, only thing i have noticed is the back box seems to be getting louder and louder - not blowing but i think its well on its way out so may need to get the custom back box done sooner rather than later !

Would a K Tec stealth type back box work as a replacement?

Yes mate thats exactly the look i want on this nice and discreet. Been looking for a cheap one for a while. Seen a full system for £40the other day however collection only from essex sadly.

Another top update.

Am I allowed to say I think I prefer the car on teh track wheels ?

I dont mind the look of the 15s to be fair. They need some tlc though as quite kerbed & need good tyres on asap. The handling is loose on these 45 profiles and hard as nails due to small profile. Acceleration is better too

I can pick it up then post it? Or not worth the aggro

Cheers for the offer mate :) i might go custom route as i cant weld very well. Going to pop down local custom exhaust place and see what the dollar is for a custom back box. If too expensive may attempt it myself

How does that inner tie rod tool work Jon? I can't picture in my head how it cranks that joint off.

It just slips over the tie rod once the tie rod end and boot has been removed - then the 3 rollers inside the end move and grip the knuckle and undo it with a 1/2 ratchet. Works great for refitting too can torque them up, no struggle with spanner or grips and no room.

Part 31 - Exhausting

The original lash up exhaust was on its last legs and starting to blow at every joint. I had patched it up in various ways to keep it going but could only do so much as it was pretty terrible. The bodge job setup was 182 manifold into home made decat 2.5" with 2 bullet silencers - 2" bend thrn tapering up to 2.5" planted onto the backbox which looked to be original diesel ?!

No options of exhaust off the shelf to fit so had to go custom. Took to Evans performance longlife exhausts in Middlesbrough for a quote. Pics of old system

Quoted price was good so booked it in for a stealth style system with hidden tailpipe - 1 rear box 2.25" bore from manifold back and vband clamps. Went in for fitting last Saturday

Old exhaust chopped off, loads of restrictions. Im suprised it went so well to be fair. Did notice it felt faster when blowing like fuck at the middle joint ans slower when resealed lol

Its quite loud as expected with 1 silencer. We db checked it at the garage and 5k rpm said 98db and rev limiter spiked 107db so may need another box or sports cat to drop a few dbs. Going to get it db checked at Croft next month so will see what it gives on their db meter. It sounds very much like the old Yozza sytle cliosport systems, bangs and pops on fast gearchange which is quite nice. The engine feels like its picked up a fair bit of power too so overall pleased with it.
