K&N, Green or other - Air filter

Thinking of upgrading from the standard air filter to a better one. I was wondering what peoples preferences are.
The guy in halford quoted ?59 for the K&N not sure if thats good or if I can get one cheaper elsewhere.

So, whats better K&N, green or is there another type that people use.
Also where is the best place to get them.

oky. Ive been told the bigger the better and that I shouldnt knock the standard air filter in the car.

It just dont look all that good though :)

Hi m8, take a look at the red filters on my twin turbo. 78mm air feed on the back and the cone is much bigger than the K&N, 6 1/4'' back dia and 5'' front. Heres the best bit, "ONLY ?20 " from my mates performance car shop. 8) 8) 8) Andie ( member 138 ).
 
hi, i understand that a bigger cone will allow more air flow, but the pipe work is still the same diameter. So unless you change the pipes to a bigger diameter you can use the biggest cone you like and not make any gains? Thats just what i thought, mabye wrong.

Yes and no

I Guess its about resistance. The turbo inlet tract is a clear flowing, smooth pipe. Your air filter needs to be big enough to not impede the flow through this pipe at all, or as little as possible.
As an example, hold an inlet pipe under a fully open tap. The water comes out as fast as it goes in, runs straight through basically.
Now hold your air filter under the tap (assuming its washable like mine :lol: ), the water has to get through the filter just as air does. Its slowed down by the filter and is forced though by the pressure of water behind it as much as running through on its own. (makes sense to me anyway LOL)

ANYWAY, what i'm saying is, the filter needs to have as little vacuum inside it as possible, making it easier for the inlet pipe to suck air in at its start.

Guy's" . i don't have an inlet pipe , my filters go straight on to the turbo. I just make sure cold air feed is very good. Inlet pipes are just a waste of space.

Hi Graham. The filters i used are made by RaceX. The filter is called Xpower induction air filter. Part no - RX10RD46. This is the red one. They come in cone and paper filter designs. Colours are Red, Blue, Carbon or Chrome. They look great and work just as well as the 57i, but at a 1/4 of the price. To fit it to your turbo, you will need a 90 Degree 57mm Id PIPE for the filter to fit to, so that the filter will miss the top rad hose on the engine. Then you can do away with all that induction pipe work. It was because of this setup on my white ph1 that i found the room to fit a second turbo. Hence the TTR. Get a good cold air feed to the filter and this works really well, "AND" what a great induction noise :lol: :lol: Hope this helps. Andie.
