Is gearbox whine normal?

Went for test drive today in 078. Now I understand why they are regarded as something so special. I believe the French do one small car each decade that is a genuine jewel. Last decade definitely has the Clio V6 as its French pinnacle. It is a car that contains so many wonderful traits in one package. They are both tough and beautiful at once in appearance. This is a difficult styling achievement to make. The handling balance at moderate speed felt fantastic. It's comfortable, well screwed together, plenty fast enough and sounds fantastic. It isn't mechanically complex in a costly to maintain way and It certainly draws attention to. The more I consider it, the Clio V6 seems like the complete package for the thoughtful car aficionado.

The only fault I detected was a gearbox whine in second gear at 2000 rpm. Is this normal or is it the sign of transmission trouble ahead?

Good to hear you enjoyed your test drive! :approve:

Its usual to hear a small amount of gearbox "whine" as i find its quite a noisy transmission anyways, but this shouldnt be excessive or just related in particular to one gear as such??

Glad to hear you enjoyed the drive. They are awesome little beasts.

Gearbox is a bit whirry in all gears, especially so in 3rd and 4th, although that may be because revs are typically quite low in those gears so you can hear the gearbox sounds better. Never had it whine at me?

I eventually found that the gearbox is very fragile and will most likely require a rebuild at some point in it's life unless driven by ms.daisy.

Not that I'm implying your gearbox is doomed but maybe search out a couple of recent topics on gearbox realted issues.

Glad to hear you enjoyed csm.

Our family pet has 58K on its clock and its 5th gear syncro had gone at 44k!(It's ok to live with for now!) As the guys above have said, they are normally a little whiny and fragile. Shame but it’s not the end of the world. I plan to get ours changed to a re-con Ph2 box next year when the Cam Belt's due!

I expect you to meet me on the M6 so we can have a proper 4th gear showdown

Had to let a fellow ginger win.

Not about this weekend unfortunately mate. Don't want to screw the gearbox up anymore than it currently is. 3rd's defo gone and 4th is now very loud. Don't want to get stranded somewhere and then have some RAC fool put holes in my sticky back plastic attaching all the towing gear

What sort of money does it cost to fix such a gearbox issue?

gearbox rebuild, and new cluth,£1500

I think £1500 is quite conservative, in a current post i was quoted £650+vat for a recond box (cheap i think) and i figure about £1500 to swap the box considering you have to take the engine out (yes i know there are some that have changed a box without but not for me i'm afraid).
then there is the clutch, that will be around £350 +vat sir, do you also want a dual mass flywheel putting in that we found to be faulty (£650+vat).
big wheeze and a cough.
