Inlet Plenum

Hi Guys
Just before the Kimbolton charity car show i spend the day working on the inlet manifold. I was having a good poke around in the engine while the covers were off, when i took the top off the plenum i noticed how badly finished the manifold was!! The two sections that make up the inlet didnt line up properly and after taking it all off i noticed that the inlet holes on the manifold were smaller by nearly 7mm and not central to the heads!!

So out came the air tools.

The results are pretty good, not so noticeable low end but up towards the higher rev range get a much stronger pull all the way through, plus with the BMC sounds amazing!
Thought i would share, well worth the time and effort!

Awesome finish!!! If there anything like as bad as the old 172 inlets i fully believe you!

Any further away pics? Not 100% on what i'm looking at.

Very cool mate

I wish I had the mechanical skills to be as brave as you!!

Do it day in day out at work so wasnt to difficult, plus the ali that the inlet is quiet soft so wasnt to bad. Most difficult bit was making the holes round and centered on the head inlets but wasnt all bad because the actual size and position had been heat marked on the inlet.

Sorry i didnt take any more than that, basically the top image is the other side of the image just below, the round holes are bolted to the cylinder heads and then the retangles are where the rest of the inlets bolts to, its a three part intake, top or lid then the midde which is the runners and the bellmouths (bottom pict) and then the base block which bolts to the head shown in picture two, i hope that makes sense

It does, yet. Not had the plenum off in mine since i bought it. Will take a look next yr.

Ali dont know if these shots make it bit easier?

Can see the heat marks showing how much smaller they are and how off centre the ports where!!

Dirty!!! Ooffttt! get it cleaned...Or better still give it to Dawn and she'll do it for you! haha!

I'll put a small bet on the fact you've generated a bit more power with this mod too! I saw about a 5bhp gain on the 172!

Lol they where horriable when they came off, all nice and shiney now they are all ported and back on. Going to rolling road it soon, we are going to remap at work and test it then, but as it stands i reckon there is 7-8 Bhp in there, feels alot better! worth while afternoon :)

Remap at work?

Mine ran 255 on the button with Map and Exhaust, then 253 with PiperX (Different day) So not far off the money.

Looks a good job well done fella. I'd do the same to mine but I'm not sure the die grinder will take to plastic very well! lmao Once my own laptop is up and running, I mail you the pics of my Trophy set up. You'll see what I mean with the different inlet shapes and angles. Your more than welcome to borrow it and have a butchers though :approve:
