I think I broke it - in less than a week. Any ideas???

My car is the latest to suffer from suspected coil failure. It sounds like an Audi quattro but goes like an Audi A2. The new exhaust just makes the change in engine note even more obvious. I've booked the car in with Renault for tomorrow morning....

...my only worry is that they'll try and wriggle out of it because of the exhaust

Is it pure coincidence that TRL's coil failed after fitting a new backbox? Anything to backup my argument would be appreciated (i.e. the exhaust didn't cause a coil to fail) :)

Just the fact that it is a very well known weak point, i have a k-tec and have gone through 2 coils in 6 months of ownership,

I changed all 6 to be safe. Looked at going the Trophy route with R Sport, but they were out of stock (Quelle surprise!) and needed modified wiring connectors. In the end I wanted the car back and went standard as they have a years warranty.
Recommend you change them all if one goes down as the back 3 are under the plenum and a bugger to get at. Why pay 3 lots of labour.
Whole job came in at £400 for 6 fitted.

Well mine is being done under warranty, so I'll just get them swapped as they fail - although next time I might say that this has happened before, and to replace the remaining ones.

I also believe they're much easier to get at on the mk2.

Evening all....Just after some advice please and I feel this thread might be what Im after but wanted to hear it again...

I drive a 255 and pulled in to the petrol station this evening. Filled up, started it, and my god was she was lumpy. The yellow exhaust gas warning light had come on and was flashing for it to then come on permanently...I managed to limp the old girl home but the engine sounds awful...Does sound like the things mentioned in this thread but just wanted to see what you guys think...

This is the first mishap with the car so to say Im somewhat deflated is an understatement [smilie=icon_cry.gif]

Cheers in advance....

Yep...you got a coil failure!

Piece of cake to sort out so first off all dont worry! Get yourself a couple ordered from here: http://www.gsfcarparts.com/index.asp

The part number is 925PC0200 (bout £21 each) its always good to have one spare in the boot)

Theres a "How to" guide to diagnosing which coil has gone and how to change it in the Knowledge section knowledge/kb_show.php?id=53

Im the least mechanically minded person in existence but even I can change them, so you really dont have nothing to worry about. 10 min job!

Top Top reply Looch, thankyou very much indeed... :approve:

I'll get cracking with this first thing on Monday....

Many thanks again 8)

Let us know how u get on fella :approve: it's one of the vee's quirks, coils can go quite alot. I've had 4 go in2 years, all have been the Renault "sagem" ones... The ones from GSF are by "valeo" these seem to be much better coils and have not failed yet! (touch wood) :)

Forgot to mention when you fit the new coil, your emissions light will still be on for a while (20 mile or so)

I remember reading the Sticky when I first joined up and at the time thought.."I have a while before that happens".... :ihatpcs:

I'll report back once done... :approve:

I carry 2 valeo from GSF in the car all the time, easy to change. If I use one just replace it so i keep my 2 spare.

PS. Notice I said 2....One is spare in the boot ;)...

Worth putting 2 in the boot ;)

I've only had one occurrence of busted coils and 2 went at the same time. Guess what? I only had 1 spare......

Now I have 2 :approve:

My first one went yesterday , I knew instantly . Thanks to DDouble for
a) The coil
b) Removing the Cats(so I could drive it home)
c) Fitting the phase 2 inlet because it would have been an awkward one
Took about 5 mins to find and change it instead of a Long expensive job at the garage !
Thanks to K1ano for the diagnose and replace instructions ... brilliant.

Took a Renault Sagem out and replaced with Valeo !

Are we absoloutely sure that the 8mm holes are in the identical place for the Trophy and road cars ?

The Trophy coils involve more work as they have different connections and 2 bolt fixing. Drilling and thread tapping is needed.
