High pitched whine

Mr Webb

New Member
I have a high pitched whine that appears to be coming from the drivers side of the engine only when the car is on tick over. I am more or less convinced that it is something to do with the heater/AC. Sometimes it can be stopped by blipping the throttle. I noticed it in the winter when the heater was on and then now when the AC is on.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be?

Thanks.

all the drive belts are on that side of the engine. I'd recommend checking that they are all ok. Are you due a cambelt soon? Not that it is responsible but you can get everythig looked at whils it's being done if it is...

Thank for that.

I have just had the cambelt changed and they have checked everything again and all is still spot on. Its one of those annoying things that comes and goes and I can't yet work out what triggers it?

Cheers.

I had the very same noise just after a new cam belt change. As it came and went, it was annoying to be quiet when I took the Vee in to have it checked out. They certainly made the noise appear quite soon.

I was told it was a worn cam belt guide and that it was a common fault. Turned out every mechanic and specialist I spoke to had never heard of such a common fault. Badly fitted tensioners was the cause, many bent valves later and all was fixed by a proper specialist. ;)

I do hope yours turns out to be something less major, and you didn't have your belt changed by Grey Devil Industries.

Hi James

This noise almost sounds like something electrical? Did the noise you had seam to be related to the heater/ac?

It also only appears every now and again and just on tick over.

Cheers.

Mine sounded like it was from the water pump. Stopped at high revs. Mine does have a squeek until the engine warms up, but so did my MK 1.
