HELP! Failed MOT

On the subject of high pressure pipe repairs we sell this new self fusing tape at work. I wonder what the MOT station would say though if you turned up with the pas pipes 'repaired' in this way. They are though guaranteed up to a certain pressure and may get you through for the time being. Go to http://www.rail-order.co.uk and search for self fusing tape.

Hallelujah...... finally got my MOT passed!!

What a pain in the backside this has been! I wouldnt wish this problem with the power steering pipes on anyone.

My Dad and I spent all day Friday getting the pipe off, then getting Pertek over to fix it and then trying to get the pipe fitted again. It has to be one of the most annoying, fiddley and time consuming jobs ever!

I will be creating a wiki for this soon for anyone else that has any issues.

For now, I'm a happy boy again :D

Well done matey bet you feel soo relieved.

Does anyone have any idea which fittings are used on the PAS system? Mine weep slightly and i just replenish the PAS fluid regularly. As it's a daily driver I'd rather have the hoses made up ready to fit in 1 hit

You dont need new hoses mate, just get the pipes off the car and get Pirtek to come and fit new connections. Its a full days work though so be prepared!!

I was going to replace the flexible pipes with goodridge hoses and decent fittings. Just need the thread info for the fittings. I'd assume that they're JIC but not 100%. Can't afford to have the car off the road as i use it for work. I'd prefer to get hoses made up and swap them out on a sunday...

Just recently had a service and seems i have the same problem. I noticed a sound almost like i small super charger whistle when under power from a roundabout. When i stripped out the rear interior i noticed the lack of power steering fluid in the tank, so i topped it up and the whistle has seemed to go away. This maybe a good guide to discovering a lack of fluid??? doesnt seem to be that bad at the moment but i am going to take the pipe off and have a complete new pipe made up by a local company. might be good as a template for the future?? My local garage who are clued up on the vee wanted to charge £312.42+ vat from main dealer plus two hours labour ,,, total of £478. ouch.

I had loads of trouble with mine last year. At one point I lost a complete resevoir of PAS fluid in one journey miles from home. In the end, loctite 55 and a smear of Threadlock sorted it. If it ever happens again ill be putting an electric PAS pump up front.

Its on the very far left of your engine bay. You need to remove all the engine covers to check and fill it up.

How do you 'all engine covers'? Anyone got a diagram?

See Knowledge Base for fitting an after market air filter. Pics of engine cover removing in that article.

Hi

Yes an electric pump is a good idea , but most original fitment ones are linked to the ECU and have a virable voltage controling the amount of pressure going to the rack, but I have use the Citreon saxo electric pump on two cars, a 6R4 and a RS200 replica ( both rear engined to), I used a early saxo pump as this has a remote resevoir, on the late one's they are built into the pump, wired to the car via a large 30-40 amp fuse and run at the full 12v all the time.

I must say they give a nice weighted feel to the steering and I would say its a good conversion, I think there would be enough room next to the battery for it, if you use ther remote type one.

Paid £70 for pump secondhand saxo pump, you need to install some where dry as they are not fully water proof, with pipes and electric bits £125- £150 should do it.

But you will need to make a dummy pulley to replace the pump on the engine or fit a shorter Aux belt, as you cant run the old pump as well.

Think Automotive in Teddington london make all my custom pipes up, they would make these pipes in a single areoquip flexable braided pipe with just the two required fittings at each end, so no joints to leak. to either replace the original pipe or for a electric pump conversion.

One would replace mine with a single aeroquip pipe as its much easier to re-install too.

Cheers

Steve
