Help annoying whine/ vibration

Not sure whats going on, i have an annoying problem on the vee....

The steering wheel seems to whine and have vibrations coming through it. It doesnt happen all the time, and will only happen when the car is travelling in a straight line. As soon as i break or turn the steering wheel it goes but comes back eventually, it disappeared for 200 miles but has come back recently.

I have checked powersteering resevoir and level is correct, the car is driving 100% straight as it always has and i have no idea what to check next.

Any ideas, ill be taking it for a full tracking and geometry set up asap

Thanks guys

Maybe you have a loose bolt/nut that holds the steering column/shaft in place? Or maybe even the rack itself is loose? Have you got any play in the wheels when its jacked up?

ive got the very same problem :s
it does not happen very oftern with me,and seems to do it when there is a slight camber in the road,
ive also checked fluid levels which are fine.
there is no play in the wheels when it is jacked up, but ive not checked if the rack is loose,
ive got her booked in for a full 4 wheel tracking and geometry set up on wednesday in renault in kidwelly
so ill post up if there is any change in the problem dave
ill also ask them to check the rack fixings while im there, thanks for the advice kevin
hopefully it will be one or the other :)

I had a similar problem ,

I had a Intermittent low pitch humming niose from the front end,
It was only apparant after driving for 20 mins or so at low speed around 30/40 MPH, and as you said, when you brake it disappears .
It turned out to be the inner pad on the passager side which was very tight in the shims in the caliper. (Chrome parts at the top and bottom of the pad when installed)
When the pad was being pushed against the disc it was remaining against the disc after the pedal was released and not return to its original position.
I cleaned the pads and reinstalled them with some copper grease on the shims. this solved the problem.

i had the 4 wheel alignment and geometry checked and adjusted and it made a difference to the handling :)
but the whine was still there, so changed the front pads today and the inner pad on the passenger side was jammed [smilie=icon_eek.gif]
so thanks for the advice chris :approve:
sorted now :)

Whine now gone :)

It turned out one of the drivers side pads was jammed in place and constantly rubbing on the disc.

However now i seem to be getting abs and service light on now and again. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,Dave

Definitely the ABS light? Something disturbed when the brakes were being fixed?

Other common random lights on/off combinations are the airbag/service which is loose connector under seat, and stop/service which is the brake fluid level being a little low and sloshing on corners.

I had the same thing last year, one of my rear pads got jammed. Sorry I didn't think of suggesting this to you!

I thought the pads had worn out which was why it was making the noise but there was loads left on them, just one side had got stuck on the disk.
Put new pads on and all was fine. I never had any issues with any lights coming on after....
