hagerty - tightening up - any ideas?

rang hagerty for a quote to get the clio insured again for spring
got told that lots of changes going on and not sure if they could even insure me
apparently they're wanting to concentrate more on older classics and not modern classics like ours
put me on hold while checking with underwriters, came back saying would insure me but would have to be a maximum of 3000 miles a year, used to be upto five, i wanted four at least.
did'nt recognise v6clio.net as a members club because its on the internet!
the quote they gave me was very good at 288 fully comp 200 excess, but i need more miles
any ideas? i dont have any no claims, did'nt need them with hagerty.
tried greenlight - 670
admiral multicar - 650 - other car is insured with them
heritage - car too young - same with hic and footman james
adrian flux were a joke at 1100
best laugh was one company wanting 2200 and 3000 excess!
ideally another company like hagerty where its a second garaged car on limited miles just cant find any
any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks -andrew.

IIRC - Hagerty's ask for a photo of the odometer as evidence of the start position at the beginning of the year. If you go over during the year you can notify them - if you have an accident and your mileage is over the agreed limit, my understanding from discussing this with them, is that you are still covered on your insurance you simply have to pay an additional premium to cover the extra mileage that you covered.

This seems quite fair, best thing is to be honest and upfront and not try to fiddle mileage declarations but genuine mistakes do happen. I am not sure all insurance companies would be as lenient - assuming the Hagerty policy is still as mentioned above.

Insurance companies are very funny things. I couldn't get anything cheaper than £3000 and around £600 excess. Adrian Flux smashed everyone and offered me it for £1900 with £500 excess which I have happily acceped. They did the same for me last year with a brilliant policy too. When your looking at quotes under £4-500 I personally think its best to look at the best policy as opposed to the price.

How will the insurance company know how many miles you cover in a year? ;)

MOT certificate?
Fair enough, I hadn't thought of that. Would the insurance company actually look at your MOT certificate if the unthinkable should happen?

Maybe you missed but I explained above how Hagerty do it, or how they explained it to me last year ...

Apologies Martin, I did see what you said about Hagerty keeping tabs on peoples mileage. I wasn't aware that this was done either.

I've never had to prove to my insurers exactly what mileage has been covered year on year. I just keep 5,000 miles on my policy every time I renew even though I may sometimes cover 4,000 or 6,000 depending on the weather we've had during the year ;)

How can you be exact with your insurers if your unsure on the mileage your likely to cover during the year?

Andrew - Sorry for hijacking your thread! I can't be much help at the moment as I'm looking to renew myself. I'll be in touch should I find a deal that may be close to the price your after.

I would say that most would allow you to increase the mileage as you needed to but would also think that if you declared say 3k and had an accident at 7k there could be questions ...

But I suppose if they don't ask for verification that is their lookout ...

managed to get some insurance - 540 for 5000 mile limit with 300 excess, i've no ncb, mirrored my other policys no claims so all good.

Who did you go with in the end Andrew?

I'm in the process of trying to find the same type of policy myself because if i'm getting a second car, I want a policy like Hagertys. But I rang them and they definitely won't consider me with me being under 30 :(

I've just renewed with a company calld Sky Insurance. Got a very good quote, much cheaper than anywhere else.

it was with a company called NIG through adrian flux, second time adrian flux quoted me, some multicar angle mirroring my no claims of the other car, i told them my best quote was 560 and i think thats what got the price down, tried to push to get more off when i'd read through the email with the quote on but could'nt get any more off.
emma - i could'nt find any other policies like hagertys our cars are'nt old enough for any of the other specialist policies. The policy i've gone with has a few plus points of free legal cover, insured on other cars third party and 90 day european driving cover. its not an agreed value though so worst case would have to fight for a decent payout i imagine. let us know how you go on
