Group B rally cars will return to Donington this year, giving fans a chance to see these famous machines in action.
The outing will form part of the Donington Historic Festival, set to take place over the weekend of April 29 to May 1, and will include Audi quattros, Peugeot 205 T16, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200, Lancia 037 and Porsche 911 RSR. There will even be an example of the Group B Ferrari 308 GTB, with the cars being run by ?Rallying with Group B? club members
All will be put into action on a specially designed, all-Tarmac stage on the GP loop, recalling the years when Donington was used as a stage and a service halt on the RAC rally between 1972 and running on and off until 1990. This included the Group B era, where lightweight, turbocharged rally cars dominated the stages. So fast did these machines become that safety standards simply couldn?t keep up and, following a series of fatal accidents that included the death of Henri Toivonen and his co-driver in 1986?s Tour de Corse, Group B was banned.
Since the demise of the class, the cars have attained legendary status for being the quickest, most powerful machines to compete in world rallying, and the Donington Historic Festival is a rare chance to see them in action.
Other attractions at the festival will include pre-1960 Touring Cars, Group C sports cars and World Endurance Championship sports prototypes from 1968-71.
