Grease On Inside of Rear Wheel

GlowRed

New Member
I took my Vee out for a run last week covering a couple of hundred miles.

I decided to clean the car on Friday and came across a large amount of grease / oil on the inside of the passenger side rear wheel. The grease was pretty thick in consistency.

Anyone got an idea what it could be?

It has been suggested that it could be the CV boot

Have you got a perished cv boot?

It was late in the evening when I found the problem so I just took the wheel off, cleaned it, took a couple of pictures and put the wheel back on.

I thought I would get some suggestions as to what the problem could be before investigating further.

Outer CV joint boot. Inner or gearbox oil seal would be all over and not inside wheel. Make sure that pads and disc are not contaminated, grease and brakes make uneasy bed fellows!

New boot and grease from local motor factors probably nearer £10-00!! I would guess that if you dig deep enough into Renault there will be boots available separately :approve:

Can't believe that I'll have to pay over £500 plus fitting for a £10.00 boot.

I'll do some further investigating tomorrow when I can look into this in more detail.

Well I haven't read of anyone fitting a whole new driveshaft just to fix a leaking boot, so there must be a workaround.

It's the same as a 172/182. They don't sell the boot on its own but as a complete driveshafts. Not that its a problem replacing the boot on its own.

There'll be lots of universal fitting boots that you will be able to use, I dont beleive that you will have to change yourdrive shaft as well, years ago you could buy a split boot that cane with super glue to glue it together to avoid a strip down

If you go to a friendly motor factors with the old boot there is a book with sizes in renault section ,i replaced the n/s inner boot with the bearing in with a laguna one .But you need the size of the shaft realy and cv to get it spot on .DONT BUY A NEW SHAFT ,ITS THEFT . Try your local prop repair place as they can get allsorts of bits .

Was it a SKF kit. I have seen that they do a complete CV joint with boot, grease and clips?
