5 Mk I incl Gordini Gordini/Alpine turbo boost

Hi all, I'm new here and wondered if anyone could help me with a couple of questions.
I was wondering if anyone knows what the standard boost level is for the Gordini turbo and how much of an improvement can be made by simply increasing the boost pressure but with the standard draw through Weber 32 and standard turbo. I see most serious tuning efforts seem to use a conversion to a blow through GTT solex or EFI but I like the simplicity of the original system.

Having owned 2 highly modded Gordini turbos I'd highly recommend going over to the 5GT Turbo boost set up. Cars run so much better as the charge temp is massively lower. People have got good results from the standard set up but they suffer from pre-ignition (det) in standard form and they make significantly more power with an intercooler. If you do stick with the standard set up you need to be extremely careful with the ignition timing if you run anymore boost at all. It's not that hard or expensive to do, although the GT Turbo bits might be a bit scarcer than they were last time I did it. If you go to an intercooled set up I'd still be quite conservative with the boost as the ring lands are a weak point . 5GT Turbo pistons and liners will be required to run much more than 150bhp reliably. Clutches struggle with much over 130 bhp but there uprated ones available and if I remember rightly PSA 1360cc engine clutch can be modified to fit and were good for about 190 bhp in uprated form - think I had a Sachs one in my last one. Gearboxes don't last very long beyond 180 bhp - they start jumping out of 5th. For reference a standard car properly set up running 12-13 psi will make 125 ish bhp, an intercooled car on that boost will make 150-160 bhp, and run cooler and more safely. Whichever way you go make sure you get the right ignition module and setting up is absolutely crucial.

Thank you all for the replies, all good news. My engine will only need low boost, as I'm converting from N/A. It was more the amount the system could flow and the hp limit that the turbo and small carb could manage that I needed to know.
My engine is turned 180 degrees compared to in a R5G, it's in a Volvo 66 which is RWD and as it is basically a Daf 66. It has a Daf Variomatic gearbox that holds the revs at peak torque (but which can be manipulated to hold closer to peak power via an added electric vacuum pump) so clutch and gearbox aren't an issue.:-)
So far it's a Salv Sacco 1690cc big bore kit with forged Pistons in a Volvo 340 B14.4e block with a mild cam upgrade and tidied inlet ports but I'm hoping to add a Gordini turbo intake side driven by a custom tubular exhaust manifold to the hot side.

What a sleeper - love it. Didn't realise the transmissions were that strong. The standard turbo will make good power, I saw 190 bhp at 18 psi but I wasn't using the standard Carb. Early Esprit Turbos used suck throughs too if I remember rightly.

Awesome stuff! So sorry to have missed this post initially. Everyone else has answered the questions as well as or better than I could...

Although I do have one thing to add. I junked the original Renix ignition module on my Gordini Turbo. I found it to be a constant source of trouble. Unreliable and not tuneable.

So I went for a 123-Tune distributor from these guys:
Allumage électronique programmable Renault 5 Alpine et Alpine Turbo

The standard 123-tune distributor doesn't fit the Alpine/Gordini Turbo as its head is too deep, so Classic Auto Elec modify them to fit. I must confess I haven't tuned it much yet - I'm running an advance curve similar to a GTT for now. Need a friend to sit in the passenger seat with a laptop! Oh and the car is off road at the moment. Too many projects ;-)

Hi yes thank you all,Tony that's good info thank you, R5Gordini I've seen those and I know they can read boost as well as vacuum, I am considering one. DaveL485 yes it's a strange thing, this is a video of a high 8 sec 0-60 with a 1.4 standard spec N/A G5 spec engine on twin 40 webers to give you an idea.
