how many of you have buggerd your box what bits have broken casing cogs shafts etc and how did you do it abuse track day arsing around drag race etc

Can't remember hearing of any standard boxes failing Ray (only the Sadev ones)
I think the clutch goes before any box damage can occur!
 
There was some discussion about the weakness of the diff casing but the real problem has probably always been the ratio selection (certainly when talking about MK1 boxes).
 
Mine went - Mk1 18k miles - whirring sound in or out of gear - suspect diff bearings, first to second gear wasnt too good either as reported by another owner here

Both of us have / are upgrading to 2nd hand Mk2's - defo feels stronger than the last box
 
WONGY, did you refer to me? i heard your other friend got a mk2 box as well?
MK1 33k miles
hard to engage 1st gear when cold, gotta be very gentle to 2nd gear or else a grind, not on ur face

i still havent install my mk2 box yet
 
Mine has had a box at 33000 not sure what went wrong but it had a new one supplied by Renault and even though was out of warranty they paid half. But that was before i had the car.
 
Heard recently of one of the drive-shaft retaining circlips popping out, meaning the drive shaft slipped out causing loss of drive. Easily fixed though once diagnosed.

Had my 'box replaced just over a year ago (mk2) approx 25k miles on it, about a month inside warranty too thank god.

Was making a very slight whurring noise but didnt feel any different. Left in the dealers who replaced it saying 'the problem is in the gearbox and we fix that by replacing it' lol. They didnt/couldnt diagnoise exactly what was wrong with it as they didnt want to open it up.

But credit where credits due, the guy came in and worked the weekend to get it back to me as i was going away on the monday, plus i got me a new gear box :thumb
 
Lots of dealers now don't tend to repair things - they just replace them. It's more cost effective, saves time, reduces the need for higher technical skill and they make more revenue for themselves and the manufacturers.

I had a steering rack issue once on my Toyota, over 1k to replace the steering rack. It had a common bushi wear issue which can easily be repaired by a specialist - which cost £150 quid exchange. Dealers wouldn't even take it off and send it for reconditioning for me and refit it as they said they wouldn't be able to warranty the whole job so refused even to remove it.

I know many independants are more accommodating. At the end of the day though a gearbox rebuild would require a specialist I guess so great in this case it was replaced no question :thumb

How complicated is the removal of the gear box on a vee? Is difficult selection from cold into 1st (mk1) a sure sign of problems?
