Gearbox noise campus 1.4

Hi there, have always driven renault 5s and done my own repairs. But this noise is new to me. my car is an M reg. I thought the noise was a drive shaft or bearing so exchanged a sound driveshaft and hub etc from another car I have for spares etc. when I fitted the parts and spun the driveshaft I could hear a noise like a rattle that they use at football matches (which seems to be inside the gearbox). the noise is still there after the swap. and now I am wondering if the gearbox needs replacing. I have a good box in the other car, will I damage the engine if I continue to drive the car as I need it for work? any replies will be gratefully received. Thanks Paul

Hi, You've posted this in the section for renault 5 1972-1984, but never mind.

I take it you have plenty of oil in the box?

Sounds to be a gearbox fault to me. possibly the diff?

Yes, Thats the first thing I checked. (sorry about the wrong Section) I removed the filler plug with the dipstick attached and oil came out from the hole, so must have above the correct amount in. are there any main problems or tips for removing a gearbox. I am going to remove the gearbox from the other car soon and wondered if there was a knack.I have the haynes manual. does the box come out from under the car or from the top! is there any way of checking the gearbox.

Got home from work. set up a scaffold framework to hoist up or lower down the gearbox (still not sure) and then set about the removal of gearbox from older car. What a job, haynes manual not as detailed as I would hope. (is there a manual with a more detailed description) Will let you know how I get on! I have the weekend. Just hope the weather holds out.

finally got the box out! upwards, everything seemed to be in the way. the studs seemed to cause the most trouble. i thought i could get away with leaving them in. after hours of struggling and cursing I had to remove them and the gearbox mounts and the radiator etc etc. now I have to do it all again, but at least I have an idea. also I will have to be a bit more gentle with the main car. will let you know what happens.

Quess what. not the gearbox ! I just tested the car after refitting the replacement and all the other stuff and the noise is still there. what a ******* well at least I know how to change a gearbox now. Must be the other drive shaft or a bearing maybe.

Well, went to work (about 20 miles)with a really loud noise and back again. Thought the wheels were about to come off! managed to get home ok, then swaped the other drive shaft with hub stub axle etc, and hey presto. no noise, what a relief. if only I had changed that driveshaft in the first place. anyone need a gearbox changing (not) great site by the way. :)

Yep .I changed the bearings prior to making the car SORN when I bought the newer car. it was a good car, only I was tempted on ebay with this one as the other needed a manifold. which renault garage wanted £400 for, so I thought I would just get a car with a good manifold and exchange it, but the car I bought was in better condition. So I have the older car in the garden under a cover. (I changed the whole lot driveshaft, hub stub axle etc. now it is much quieter.only the idle speed control valve seems to have stopped working now! and the noise on switch off has stopped.(I think that is from the ISCV)
cheers Paul.
