Gearbox failure *Again! 02-2011!

Yesterday I was cruising along. No problems with changing gears, no rattling or screeching of any kind. Stopped to let a car go by, drove away again and nothing happened except that the gearbox started to make deafening mechanical noises. The hole car started to shake.

The clutch seems fine. I can still put in every gear but when I release the clutch there is no movement except the sound of broken shafts or something.
The gearbox never had a wrong rattle or something like it in the past, even the "Synchro's" never made a noise.

Somebody got a clue? I will take it apart tomorrow.

Our gearbox's 5th gear syncro has gone and we're fearful of something like this happening to ours [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

You may be lucky and may have just smashed the middle out of you friction plate. Hope you get it sorted soon, best of luck.
 
as above, i think it sounds like the driven clutch plate, if you get stuck i have a spare clutch in excellent nick.
 
If the clutch has spat its dummy out then you will struggle to select all 7 gears. However my 'box went to pot earlier on in the year whilst on an oxford meet. The gears all felt and operated fine but as i drove more and more miles through the day it started to sound like a straight cut gearbox with an accompaning clicking/clunking type of sound. I still have the gearbox to strip and repair but im pretty sure mine was due to a bearing failure on a mainshaft.

One thing is for sure though, removing the gearbox is not that hard and does not require taking the engine out. I changed mine in the best part of 3-4 hours. If you do end up taking it out, don't forget to disconnect the flywheel timing sensor. I did and broke it which turned out to be a royal pain in the ass.

Mine went last year with the diff bearing whining like hell

Was a good excuse to upgrade to a Mk2 box - has better ratios and bigger diff casing I believe

Defo worth the upgrade if you end up fitting another box if you can find one secondhand of course!

It is yes, however it will happen again! So replacement shafts could be the solution. If it's on the box end then you are in big Doo Doo!!!
 
I Agree with Ali,

This does sound like the circlip on the left hand inner joint, When this pops off, the "spider" (three legged roller bearing part) pops out of the gear box causing the car / engine to judder when you take up drive,

This is quite a straight forward repair as long as the shaft circlip recess , spider and cup are not damaged.

I would bet everything I have on what Ali said to be at fault. I may even still have the parts lying about! Cost me 300 quid at Reno with new gearbox oil!!
 
Does it make the noise whilst in neutral with your foot off of the clutch? Can't see it being driveshaft issues if its making the noise when stationary. Is definatly a possibility whilst on the move though.
 
I start it up. Put in first and release the clutch in the vid. After releasing the clutch you hear the terrible sound. In neutral with my foot of the clutch you hear only a sligth rattling noise (not normal though)

I also tried this with the wheels of the ground and they start spinning in every gear while the engine unit is vibrating(not normal) a little but it works fine. Ofcourse with no resistance of propulsion it's okay
 
I would suggest jacking the car up at one side With the engine off and without the ignition on,
Put the car in 6th gear and try turning the wheel by hand to see if you can get a better feel for whats going on,
If its the drive shaft you should feel it jumping at regular intervals,
(not sure how much force this would require though)

If the car is stationary, and you hear the noise, I can't see it being related to the driveshaft as they would both have to turn/spin to produce the noise. Judging by the noise in the clip, I'd actually say its your clutch. Sounds like its doing it at engine/crank speed and is making some seriouse vibrations. You could blow the crap out of the box but it would never make vibrations like that at tick over.

I have seen something similar to this on a transit van , It turned out to be the friction plate lining on the clutch had completely disintegrated leaving only the metal disc / damper springs, This in turn was randomly catching on the pressure plate causing a shudder
 
Mine has done exactly the same thing, your youtube video brings back horrible memories! I tried towing home in neutral and there were still noises of rubbing even with engine off. It's booked in in a couple of weeks, I initially thought maybe a driveshaft had popped out but have taken both off and looked at the ends which all seem fine.

Will be interested to hear what the final outcome is with yours as I bet its the same with mine.

Anyone got two gearboxes spare :rofl: or should it be.. [smilie=icon_cry.gif]
