Full 16V Conversion questions

Okay here's what I have
A donor PH2 16V cabby (no abs) complete car
A 1.4 PH2 Saloon (I want this to be 16v spec)

What can be used from the cabby and what will I need to buy

All I want is the engine/box brake set up thrown into the 1.4, will I need to purchase mounts, pipes or anything else?

As for the brakes, what will i need to bring over from the cabby to the saloon?

Also I dont think they will but I want to confirm, will the clocks need changing

Many thanks as ever

If you got two full car, then it's easy, Drop subframe with engine everything on, and change the loom.

oh yeah, God im an idiot, thanks peter, the next bit, what would the brake transplant for rear discs involve, could the entire rear beam off the cabby go on? anything else require switching over? also will the original 1.4 clocks work in there and can the cabby exhaust be used

swap the entire rear beam off the 16V, and the clocks.

An aftermarket exhaust for a cabby is the same as a hatchback exhaust, which fits a saloon. So I'd say yes. However I'm not 100% sure that the standard cabby exhaust isn't different.

this sounds like it might be nice and straight forward for once, i vaguely recall someone saying the cabby exhaust would fit a hatch before, just wanted to confirm. As for the braking, will pipes need much changing or anything or again is it a case of take the whole lot off the cabby?

Also would the shocks be a straight swap? Front and back?

You might need to fanny about with brake lines a bit when you put the 16V rear beam on the 1.4, you'll have to take the proportioning valve as well.

Suspension is straight swap, yes. As Peter says, at the front you'll just drop the subframe with the lower arms, hubs and shocks still attached.

My honest opinion on the whole thing.

Front subframe with engine and box as mentioned.

No need to change loom, just leave loom on engine and plug it straight in. The 1.4 fuel pump will run the 16v engine.

16v exhaust will come up short on the saloon so you need to extend that or you will just gas yourself. The exhaust is the same until the tailpipe where the saloon pipe is a few inches longer. A cheap chrome trim will extend it enough tbh.

Brakes, fronts if you want to be proper pikey and assuming it has girlings up front which it should just leave the calipers on the car and sand one pad down a bit, it will then fit the 16v discs and you'll have the 16v carrier anyway. The difference in caliper is the width, you can split the caliper and swap it. Or if you want to do it right just swap the calipers over and fit new flexis.

Rear axle, don't bother in all honesty. If you do have to have rear discs then leave the bias valve off. Thats how I run mine and I'm harder on brakes than 90% of folk. The rears don't lock as easily as people think especially with decent tyres and ok suspension.

read through project y this is all pretty much covered with pictures.

.

That's beyond proper pikey

nice one, thanks lads, if the whole sub frame comes off the hubs, discs calipers and all will be on it so its just a matter of reconnecting these on the saloon is it? this sounds awesomely straight forward to me, much as i love the laguna i cant look at a 19 in the driveway anymore without driving it

the 6 bolts, well 4 bolts and 2 stays hold the front end on and then the 2 on each strut top.

Its pretty easy tbh.

it sounds amazingly easy to be honest, so its really a matter of doing that, reconnecting the loom, switch the clocks, extend the tail pipe, switch the rear beam if desired and pretty much drive it on then, thats awesome, i didnt know that the cabby rear shocks were compatible with the saloon. also has anyone had any experience with 17" wheels on a saloon? I have a really nice set there with nice tires just dont want to go wrecking the driving of the car just for looks though

why swap the clocks?

If you want digi dash you need to swap the clocks and the tank sender. I'd just use the 1.4 stuff.

17's fit and you can use them.

I don't recommend them though. Poor ride, slows it down takes away from the car.

Stock sized 15's tbh are the best also cheap premium brand tyres (toyo's and uniroyal rainsports my 2 current fav tyres)

i have a set of 14s on the saloon at the minute with original hub caps, stylish, i thought the clocks needed changing too, something was telling me they were different but if theyre not then thats one less thing on the to do list, even better, im hoping to have this done in the next couple of weeks, to be honest i dont have the skills or the tools myself but i know a place i can get assistance then ill move back to the r19 dream and part with the laguna, much as i love it, i think the 19 is more suited to these third world roads over here

shall do, a jewish racing gold valver, interesting sight, the plan is full mechanical conversion after which possibly a 16v bonnet, spoiler and some 17 inch multi spoke alloys for special occasions, ill drive her daily with the small wheels on her though, all in all id like the end result to be a proper looking 16v saloon in that colour with that zany interior

i think if i was going spoilreless id keep the original 1.4 wheels with hub caps on it, otherwise ill go with the spoiler with either 1.4 alloys or steelies but throw the 17s on for special occasions
