Fuel pump

Managed to sort my ignition cutting out fault, by repklacing the tdc sensor.

But now it's still cutting out but with a different problem. the ignition is fine. But the fuel pump had started to struggle to deliver fuel to the carb, so stripped a spare pump and cleaned it out and fitted that, and plenty of fuel was then being pumped through. So took it for a spin. Low and behold it cut out again, with the fuel filter empty. There was a third of a tank in. It was on a bit of a hill so I rolled it back till level. Tried it and fuel;k came though fine. Checked the pipes for kinks and tried it again. cut out again after a mile or so. Got it home. It will sit and tick over outside my house for as long as you want. I had it ticking over for about an hour and fuel was pumping through fine. Took it for a few short spins up and down my street. And noticed that after driving the car it starts pumping bubbles of air into the filter until eventually the fuel is repolaced by the bubbles and the engine cuts out.

I've brimmed the tank thinking it may be air locks forcing through and the pressure of a full tank may force the air through. But the bubbles are never ending after driving but if you just start it and not drive it there are no bubbles.

There are no apparent leaks of fuel apart from a little bit from the tank after brimming it for the first time.

So surely the fuel pump can be the only part at fault. Mine has 3 connections on the pump. I bought a new one listed for the car but that only has 2 connections so no return to the tank. So I haven't used it.

There is also an electric pump fitted to the rear of the car but it's not connected.

Any ideas?

The electric pump has no connections to it, either fuel lines or wires. So it's been bypassed all together but it's still mounted there for some reason!!?

I had an issue with fuel starvation. It was caused by the rubber pipe from the tank perishing. It had collapsed internally, meaning the pump couldn't suck the fuel through. The problem was difficult to spot as it would only occur when driving and I would sort of get fuel out, just not very much. It's just a thought, and may not be the actual cause, just a possible cause.

The only way to check this is to remove the tank! Not something you'll relish as it's full. I've had to remove the tank a number of times on my car and I always seem to do it at just the wrong time, when it's absolutely full!

Good luck,

Andrew

Right, thanks for the advice andrew.

I've spent many hours sorting the problem but it's now done.

I tried a new fuel pump, but still no fuel getting through.

So Drained the tank and removed it, found the metal pipe in the tank sender was pretty blocked, so cleaned it out, put the tank back on, and all back together.

Tried it, but no fuel getting through at all. Tried a couple of pumps I have on the car but stil no joy. So again, the tank came off, and found that when I'd put it back on the first time one of the pipes must have got a kink in it, so cut the damaged part of the pipe and then put it all back on. It's pretty hard to get the tank back on without the pipes getting caught at the top.

But then I've tried it and it's all working fine again now. Got to sort the mixture a bit though
