fuel pump help!!

Now I know that my cars not really a retro renault, but seeing as I know there are enough renault nutters on here to make kellogs nervous I'm begging some help, here goes

Before I go and shell out a wedge for a new fuel pump, I'd like to make sure there is nothing else that could possibly be at fault.

the car is a 2002 1.6 16v clio, k4m engine

for a while when I start it its been spluttery, lately the pump priming noise has become very gritty sounding, and it now takes me switching the key to 2 clicks and then back off and on again to get the pump priming noise at all. also the car has started to take longer and longer turning before it fires.

as far as i know there isnt a fuel filter I can get at, its all in one unit with the pump and the sender which sits in the top of the tank.

Is there anything else it could possibly be or that I could check before I have to spend mega bucks??

Thanks in advance
Budj

it could just be that the fuel filter is blocked which is making the pump work harder, how is it in normal driving?

check the connections on top of the pump as they can corrode.

other test is get the pressure checked, if its spluttering then it sound sfooked of the internal regulator is buggered.

The fact it can take a couple of turns of the key before priming could also mean the transponder rings playing up 9i.e. you may have 2 problems)

the pump setup on these later cars is terrible and problems are well known.

sorry to sound dumb chris but the internal regulator, is that in the tank or on the end of the fuel rail??

also what and where are the transponeder rings??

neo - as far as I know there isnt a fuel filter thats accessable

cheers for all the help :D

Yeah get the pressure checked, this is relatively easy to do, i got it done when i had fuel problems and it soon showed that my fuel pressure was lower than usual. At least you definitely know its that then. It is one of those cars that have a mechanical pump in the engine bay as well? Check that out, its usually got a button thingy you push down to help fuel through, capillary action style. That might only be on diesels though.

regulator is in the tank part of the fuel pump unit.

transponder ring is around the ignition barrel, cuts th eimmobiliser, however if it plays up you can crank the car till the battery dies as the fuel pump won't prime, however the immob light should tell you if theres an issue there.

i've said it before on an other post but......the fuelpump relay is surely the first thing to check?
