Fuel pump failure

Having not had time to investigate further.

The 19 cut out at a round about Sunday night and wouldnt start again so got it recovered home.

The roadside chap did the basics and thinks its the fuel pump. He checked cam belt, relays/fuses noticed that the fuel lines where empty both main and return.

Battery power is fine. The engine turns but there is ignition.

I remember having this problem when i first got her and thought that the ecu was damaged and so replaced it with a superchips phase 1 16v one and the car has been fine for the last two years. I doubt its immobiliser based on phase 1 ecu not having one and the car working for the last 2 years.

Any info on location and instruction for fuel pump replacement. Will call some auto factors for part price.

Also noticed this on ebay anyone know if it would work and is worth purchasing;
RENAULT 5 9 19 16V 21 R5 R21 GT TURBO ESPACE FUEL PUMP on eBay (end time 14-Oct-10 14:35:14 BST)

Is a fuel filter change recommended at the same time and anything else?

Thanks.

Ok the pump is in the tank and so the tank requires dropping.

Are there other checks to carry out leave that to last or just go ahead and change the pump.

Does any one know the part number for a D53D R19.

Any pictures about of the process.

ebay pump is no use.

Anyway did you check the relay?

If no go thump the tank as hard as you can without denting it obviously. See if it works, often the commutator segments wear through so the pump if it stops in a certain position won't work again.

If it does go again change it anyway as its fecked which is fine considering its age.

when dropping the tank expect the bolts to either snap or spin the captive cages out.

empty the tank as well

Surprised you cant access the pump from inside the car but, hey ho.

Worth giving the tank a good flush out while it's off, if it's got much fuel in it just strain it and re-use.

And considering the minimal cost, definitely worth a filter change. ;)

I have recovery service with insurance so the fella run multi meeter tests on the fuses in the passengers side box inside the engine bay wher wheel arch is and they where all ok. I havent double checked his work. Without having looked are there any pics/signs of the pump relay?

ta for clearing up the ebay pump. ill have a look at autofactors v euro and gsf price on one.

I havent tried giving it a solid hit due to needing to raise the car but i will try that i know how relays can sometimes wake up on an old car.

Ok thanks for the heads up on tank removal do the fuel tanks have a drain nut?

pump relay is in the box the recovery guy was in. there should be 3 relays, one for the fan, 1 for the efi and one for the fuel pump. as for which is which, easiest way to tell is if the car had the daft key switch immobiliser, its spliced into the fuel pump relay.

pump the fuel out through the senders hole which is what you can access from the boot

the filter is underneath the car ahead of the rear axle on the offside.

And yes it is worth changing its probably the original one.

However the bracket and its mounting bolts can break so be careful.

replaced mine recently, best not to remove the bracket there's no need, i did and i wish i'd not

I find if you don't remove them it just tears off at the mounting bolts. Then again i'm in an area that used to have a lot of salt on the roads etc.

Usually need to take them off and use mole grips etc to get the clamp bolt off.

But in the sunny south you might get away with undoing the single 10mm clamp bolt.

Its been difficult to track down a pump so far its a main dealer but they want £250!!!!!!
Tried local autofactors and the usual gsf and euro.... Any one?? Ideas second hand parts a bit touch and go??

Chris seen as there are a wide range of them can you link post your suggested value for money alternative please.

Thanks for your time on this.

Great thanks much appriciated will try buy the skyline pump if not will do a buy it now on the ford fiesta one.

Will take pics when i remove the existing one tomorrow night.

you may have to add a bit more rubber inside the cradle to hold the pump firm as they come in a few dia's and theres 2 different dia 19 in tank pumps i have seen.

Make sure you change the fuel filter and a good move is to sweep a magnet about if possible in the tank as there will be rust in there. of course if its full of fuel then thats a problem.
