Fuel Gauge showing empty

I filled the car up a few weeks ago and then went away on hoilday.

Came back today and the battery was flat, so jump started it, and gave it a little run.

During the little run (10-15mins) i noticed it seemed to be drinking petrol at a incredible rate. In the lat 5 mins of the drive, the fuel light came on (even with 3/4 of a tank left)

I got home turn it off for a few mins, left it on tick over for 4-5 mins, looked again and fuel guage was next to empty.

I looked under the car and no sign of any leaking petrol. When i restarted the car the fuel light was on again, and fuel guage seemed to be completly not working.

I've searched this and not had much luck, but am sure i've read about a similar problem on here.

And idea's would be most welcome.

Update

I've spoke to friend of mine and he's said that it might be somthing tod with the battery being flat ?

I have placed it on charge tonight as the drive i took it on didn't fully recharge it, i'll recheck it tomorrow and hopefully the problem with have fixed itself.

Update

Fully charged battery has made no effect.

Rung up renault, they are fully booked for 2 weeks, 2 weeks with no fuel gauge, i'm not happy.

fill it up reset the trip and drive no more than 130 miles then top up - easy and stress free till they fix it!

Which in fact begs an interesting question ... what is the trip showing in terms of distance to next fill up?

Thanks for the help guys, and especially to the link about reseting the computer, my searches were based around the specific issue of 'fuel gauge' and not resetting the trip computer.

Anyways resetting seems to have done the trick and its 99% back to normal which is a relief as it now saves me having to take it in for the day.

In regards to the trip computer distance to next fill up, it just says "---" instead of any distance, even having driven 35 miles with it today. I can live without this though til its next service as i usually find this number wildly inaccurate.

Thanks again,
Tom

Mine is exactly the same. If I do a reset it is usually fine for a day or two and then reverts back to "---" and low fuel level.

jamie, yeah, i spoke to soon, because mine has just revered back to the low fuel level and light on.

have you taken yours into renault yet and did they have any luck with it ?

i recon they'll have it for a day, reset it, hand it me back and then i'll be re-ringing them the next day. I have no confidence they'll get to the source of the problem.

You actually think your typical dealer knows the reset sequence! There have been several instances where a simple reset was required after a coil failure ... but they replaced the instruments instead at great cost!

Too many other things to sort out on it before the guage problem. I'd have got rid of the car by now if it wasn't so much damn good fun. ....It's Sooo expensive to run!

Just goes to show that theres miles more expertise on here than in any renault garage...........and no 2 week wait either!!!!

Similar problem - changed speedo to a Km version from the miles one. Now when I fill it up - the gauge only shows 3/4 full?. Did not notice how full the tank was when I installed the speedo! Have reset the speedo but to no avail - anyone know the reason - everything else is fine so it's not that bigger deal.

nick,

drissile it right to the brim in the tank then check the speedo, but i'm sure i've heard other people on here mention somthing about their tank never fully filling up
